Looking for an asset managemnet system

The school I work at is need of an asset management system that can cover the whole school, naming location, date of purchase, last PAT tested, etc.

At the moment our science department uses IRIS Assets because of the detail they can go into with keeping track of chemicals and the like but we find it unintuative for the rest of the school.

We also use Freshservice for ticketing but find the asset package to be too expensive.

Any suggestions? I'd like to know about ease of use, which info can be recorded, whether you can create your own fields to fill out and anything else that makes it a useful piece of software.

We use Asset Management from IRIS (not long purchased AM).

 

Does the job. Very cheap 3 year deal I think we have.

For recording computer details automatically SnipeIT is ok, and GLPI is better (it'll record serial numbers of monitors plugged into computers better, for example)

Another +1 for SnipeIT we host on digital ocean for our MAT it costs something silly like £3-4 a month and puts us in a much better position compared to the spreadsheets we was using before. Its also really customisable happy to give an overview of our setup.

I don't think a one size fits all solution is possible for it, because different departments have different needs.

 

Science tracking of chemicals is not an asset management issue - that should be in some sort of chemical management tool like LabExpert.

ICT track a lot more than simple assets, so need a tool like Snipe-IT for inventory management.

Asset tracking is usually in relation to financial assets, so something like IRIS covers that.

We use Civica Asset Managment (Formerly Parago). It works well as a general asset manager for us and the site team.

Thank you all, I'm going to look into SnipeIT in particular as that is definitely getting the most votes. Using their demo and free tier should give me a good idea of how it's set out.

I have used Lansweeper in the past and found it really useful for keeping track of IT assets. Unfortunately, it was decided for me that school can no longer afford it.

+1 for GLPI, particularly for IT assets.

 

The latest version (v11) allows for custom asset types. You can also add custom fields to the built-in asset types using a plugin (named "Additional fields").

The agent will give you all the inventory information about your computers that you could ever want.

 

The agent can also be used to run scheduled inventories of other devices such as printers and network switches that can't run the agent. That's quite handy for inventorising switch port connections to other devices like IP phones, cameras, etc. via LLDP.

 

As to how well it suits managment of assets like chairs and tables, IDK.

We also use Parago (Civica Education Operations) for IT asset management and the site team use it for asset management and the helpdesk function. Nothing special but does the job.

SnipeIT all the way!  You can easily add custom fields so we've added things on like IMEI numbers for the mobile phone category and Last Time PAT Tested Date on other equipment etc.  Easy to use and it's Open Source!  There is a cloud based version you can pay for that comes with support.

Does your MAT use Lists for other things to replace MS Forms for example? 

 

Are there any issues with it existing in SharePoint?  Are you also big into SharePoint?  We are just dipping our toes into using SharePoint seriously so any tips greatly received.

 

Have found ChatGPT to be a godsend for digging out what Microsoft 365 can and can't do etc.
