CCTV in School Toilets

The teacher say so is that matter this is not a law court. Why have parents become such scum not supporting teacher. Why will parents not take the teacher word when they are the authority about their horrible brat.

 

Because people are biased about members of their own family. Children especially.

We had a student go around and destroy 20+ keyboards. All on CCTV etc.

 

Parents refused to pay and had the audacity to accuse us of failing to educate their child in the manner of their ways. It actually kicked off a massive legal thing and the student is no longer with us.

 

Half the battle is the parents.

Kids are kids.. some are bad.. some are rotten.. some don't care.. some find it funny.. some do it to look 'cool'.. the list is endless.

 

We are, quite rightly, no longer allowed to say "boys will be boys" when it comes to sexual harassment - so why is it still OK to say "kids will be kids"?

Because then you get a false confessions,...

Its not that easy, especially when you dont know timings of the damage.

We have started limiting different bathrooms to certian year groups, our site team are too stretched to check for damage more then once a day.

We had our open plan toilets and CCTV installed by our LEA who I imagine got the approval of the highest levels of the Welsh government, other schools have been designed in a similar way, the CCTV's only show down a row of cubicles so would be no different to what you might find in a large shopping centre.

 

Our school was looking into vape sensors and while I don't know the whole details I was told they were way too expensive for us to even consider. Plus if you had vape sensors but no CCTV, what would you do? The vape sensor goes off, by the time someone gets up there the pupil has either gone, or they just say "What vape? Nothing to do with me boss".

 

And I have overheard year 9 pupils boasting about what vapes their parents bought them for Christmas. So there's that.

So we have CCTV in toilet areas, but they can only see the sinks & who enters a cubical. All mirrors were removed to prevent any chance of the CCTV catching anything it shouldn't.

 

Vape sensors simply *Would not* get what we needed to clamp down on - Bullying, damages & students hiding stuff in ceiling tiles. All a vape sensor would do is record someone is vaping - Great, who? How can we tell without cameras or having someone instantly run over?

 

Looking at the letter this school sent out, it doesn't make it at all clear what they are recording - So if they are just covering the sinks they don't mention that. I think it was a really bad letter to send as I would be equally be shocked as a Parent without any more information.

And my lil angel had more positive points than negative points this year so she deserves it

I feel that the reason these kids are vile, and their parents are vile, is that THEIR parents (my generation at a rough guess) were vile. I went to what was a good, new, comp, and there were idiots trashing toilets back then. Still see some of them around town...

Hi Everyone

 

Having been off for a week I`m catching up on this thread all in one go and would`ve liked to respond to a few comments individually but for the sake of practicality I`ll say a few things here instead.

 

I appreciate all your comments, some of them have opened my eyes to things I wasn`t aware of which is healthy for all manner of reasons - so thank you for those.

 

Someone said they thought Halo would be worse for GDPR than a CCTV system, I`m curious as to why they think that given Halo doesn`t record anything other than environmental data. Bullying was also mentioned and someone said that Halo can`t help with that - well it can. There are aggression sensors/parameters in place along with keyword or phrase recognition which can activate a bespoke response in real time. CCTV is great after the fact - Halo alerts `at the moment of` which from a safeguarding point of view is, in my opinion much more valuable.

 

The same goes for the medical emergency element - I have real life examples of students using the "HELP EMERGENCY" function of Halo.

 

There is a lot more to Halo than just Vape - Which is why I bang the drum and hope to get as many installed as possible, is it an advert? Well kind of I suppose yes - No harm in that.

True to a point, but you can't use any of that as evidence in front of a board of governors for exclusion. Yes of course they can do what you say - they can alert you instantly to issues whereas CCTV is reactive, but they are still heavily false-positive driven whether halo, verkada or . This wasn't a comment made anti-Halo, it was "please don't knock CCTV in toilets as it's an invaluable resource".

We’ve been testing Triton detectors at our school instead of halo and they’ve been okay so far. They catch vape and THC really well and don’t need calibration like some others do, which is better than going the cctv route.

Half the trouble is these days is not having the staff numbers, or more specifically available staff to loiter around doing nothing else; then in-lesson toilet visits "Please miss, I'm dying for a strawberry cream flavoured wee!".

Without CCTV (or at least CCTV covering the enterance) how do you know who was in the toilet when the alarm went off?

You don't - unless again there's a spare member of staff (lol) available to go running to the loo. CCTV is usually necessary alongside these devices as a reactionary/post incident measure to identify them.
