Why , just why would someone do this [Cut down the Sycamore Gap tree]

That looks like it was done with a chainsaw with a very large bar. Not the sort of thing vandals just have. I'd suggest something fishier than an attention seeker or 'youths'.

My bets:

  1. Someone didn't like it "spoiling" their view or it prevented them running/using their vehicle along/over the wall or similar.
  2. Someone did it to hurt someone they've fallen out with.

I don’t understand why anyone would do that. I could sort of understand if it was a protesting against *something*. But just. A bit speechless.

I'm not sure that harsh, reactionary punishment is conducive to understanding why people do shocking things. In fact, it might often be the cause.

I expect the cat bin lady is breathing a sigh of relief that her time as the goto public enemy number 1 could be coming to an end.

10mins of TicToc fame?

Although if it were filmed for social media cloud, you'd have expected the video to have popped up somewhere by now.

at the risk of sounding stupid....... i know nothing about trees.

can it be grafted..... or another method to try and save something....... even if it had an "ugly" knot at the bottom at least there would be something.

just such a shame to think its gone forever!

The stump is alive, they will try to coppice it and a new tree may well grow from there. It may well be a bit odd looking, but a tree is a pretty resilient thing.

Someone looking for a Before and After fame, well they will be pretty famous if and when they get found out.

I predict a lot of good prints and images of the view will probably go up in price as the view will never be the same again.

I wonder if the NT could take the wood and make keyrings etc. out of it and sell for a fundraiser? I once had a keyring made from the old ships timbers of HMS Victory.

I'm sure it would be very successful.

Thats a awesome idea!

They do it for the same reason internet shock sites existed back in the day, for the same reason "it's just a prank, bro!" was a thing, and for the same reason trolling exists.

Because it's fun. Because 'getting one over other people' makes them feel good.

Because selfishness-induced schadenfreude.

For me the whole thing reminded me of that Simpsons episode where Bart cuts off the head of the town hero's statue after hearing how cool 2 school bullies thought it would be, but that turned out to be "cloud talk" and everyone hated him for it.

But really who would do this? did they know it was a protected tree: if not why just cut it down and leave it there without taking the wood? My friend has a wood burner and finds it far easier to take trees that are already "on their way out"
