Can anyone please advise if office 365 backup is good to archive shared mailboxes.

We use a synology disk station to backup our office 365 tenant. It can backup shared mailboxes.

We purchased baracuda cloud to cloud for the price it was a no brainer unlimited storage backup.

Definitely a great option given the unlimited storage and retention. As always, it's worth a comparison with a solution that charges per TB, but from feedback, we usually find its significantly more cost effective for the schools.

Our Synology model is not compatible for Office 365 backup . I am looking for cheapest version. I tried Veeam backup but have some questions regarding configuration.

Going to start new port regarding that. If anyone knows free option , please let me know

Same as us, we're just in the process of moving to Barracuda for O365 backups. Unlimited storage, and we only pay per user for staff as well, but it includes student users in the backup. From our research this was quite unique, most charged per user so we would have had to pay for student licensing as well.

yeap, the cheapest solution is a synology+ station. I have a DS 218+ it is nicely done, local and well documented. £500 for a unit with drives. (cheaper than cloud solutions)

Nope just a normal NAS. I've never had to use it as Office 365 has such good backup features already, but its nice peace of mind.

which provides unlimited onsite and Microsoft 365 backups with costs based on student count (whereas Barracuda is Staff) I am currently investigating if worth consolidating to Redstor or keep as we are.

 

 

Must admit the portal GUI is nicer on Redstor etc.

A Synology NAS running active backup will be your cheapest solution. But this would be on-site.

 

You could however, then back up the NAS to a cloud solution like backblaze or wasabi though

Might depend on the model you have, as not all of them have the add-on available. But yes... I use it for Google Workspace, backs up our user drives, shared drives, calendars, mail, contacts. Have a read here: https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/feature/active_backup_office365

Redstor won't quote directly, you are meant to go via your existing Redstor MSP, or one of your choice if you don't currently use it. However, you could contact Max Ashton-Hardman [email protected] like I did, who was very helpful.

 

I'm still doing the calculations, but comparing what we are currently paying for (and getting with) Redstor (quota'd, on-site) & Barracuda (M365) vs Redstor Education Offering (unlimited on-site & M365) it should work out cheaper and I'll be able to backup everything on-site too (instead of being selective).

I've not been given the 'cost per student' price as yet, as the quote I've been given to date includes upgrading our existing subscription term of Redstor combined with another year (of the full package). Still waiting for our Redstor VAR to advise.

This is my logic too. Redstor can give you a trial of the M365 backup feature, if you haven't asked already!

 

I do like their Web Portal, being able to monitor and manage all backups (Onsite & M365) including restores.. it certainly ticks a lot of (RPA) boxes too.

I signed up for a RedStor trial earlier in the week. Activated the M365 stuff in the space of about 5 minutes, so that was easy.

 

I've started setting up the on prem backups now too, currently seeding my largest server to it which looks like it'll take a couple of days. Demo with them on Monday (using the trial to formulate questions in advance really) but i feel like i've already made my mind up that this is the way to go. I've got 4 x 18TB drives in a NAS that i'm going to utilise for a local copy of my backups to speed things up too. Very impressed, beside the on-site copy i'll be keeping, a hardware-less backup solution that i actually feel ticks all the boxes, very impressive stuff.
