My synology takes around 8 hours, for the whole tenant even all the teams stuff which needed the extra permissions from Microsoft. (I have the cheapest +NAS)

Out of interest, how big is your tenant in TB?

How would the Synology option look in a Ransomware attack situation compared to a cloud backup such as Barracuda?

not as good. The *ONLY* reason is cost, pure and simple, it will never be faster due to MS throttling, it will never be as robust as a cloud provider, it will never be as secure as a true immutable backup. If I had the budget and money then yes I would jump on a cloud solution. I would use VEEAM and backup to a cloud provider with immutable buckets. Unfortunately I dont and cant.

Possible, I thought a 1Gbs uncontested line would be enough, but perhaps not?

Something is wrong with it though, it was taking over 2 days to backup our Sharepoint sites (around 400 sites, 7TB or so) and hogging the internet bandwidth whilst doing so (80 MBs shown on the dashboard). If I were to guess, I've probably chosen the wrong RAID, or it's trying to delete the old backup whilst downloading the new one. I will revisit over half term.

At that pace it should pull all 7TB in 24 hour 19 mins (ish) then switch to incremental? not sure how it works, don't have one - but very interested.

80MBs is 640Mbps, so you should have maybe 200-260Mbps still available on your 1Gbps connection - is the NAS tapping out at this write speed? Could this be Office 365 throttling?

I'm looking to backup roughly the same amount of data, in the same way, so very interested in where the bottleneck is - don't want to purchase something that's not going to get the job done.

We've recently moved to Redstor for all of our backups after previously using Veeam (on prem backups only) for many years, CT for cloud backups. We're now paying less per year with Redstor (Stone Group are our reseller) for unlimited on prem and unlimited cloud (Google and/or Microsoft) using their new Education pricing. Their service utilises two UK based data centers and, alongside production data, meets RPA requirements.

Yes, 200-260 Mbs remaining bandwidth when you've got 700+ devices all vying for internet bandwidth was causing me issues! It shows you RAM and CPU utilization on the dashboard, but not Read/Write. I don't think the network was the bottleneck, and RAM and CPU were around 30% and 80% respectively from the snapshot I was looking at. Leads me to believe it was read /write speed. I chose RAID 5 when configuring the NAS, but I suspect there's a better / faster RAID more appropriate for this service.

Also, I'm not sure it does incremental backups, it seemed to be taking a full back up each time, but I stand to be corrected on that. In all honesty, take my experience with a pinch of salt, I just bought it and set it up 'on the fly' without reading any manuals or guidance, so I could have misunderstood or chosen my configuration of the box poorly. If anyone happens to have a good guide, that would be very helpful.

4.37TB according to the storage reports.

This is a typical email report I get when run

Backup task [backmeup] was completed but some items cannot be backed up.

The status of each service:

Just going back to the Synology O365 backup, is the data of any use without the tenancy?

Can you view/extract data without restoring back to the tenancy?

My thinking if you can could this actually make things worse in the case of a local network compromise? If the O365 tenancy wasn't compromised they could get the O365 data from your NAS?

Necroing this thread out of laziness and as all parties that i'm interested in hearing from are already in it!

Just got 2 quotes, 1 from Barracuda (per staff head) and 1 from Redstor (per student head).

Long story short, Barracuda came in £2k cheaper per annum. Both offer unlimited storage but I read people going to Redstor over Barracuda (mainly for pricing reasons).

Are there any other benefits I am missing here other than pricing because my quotes are not reflecting that so Barracuda are looking like the winners to me?

Perhaps difference is due to the fact that Redstor includes backing up of on-site data too (e.g. all on-premise servers / data etc) whereas Barracuda is for M365 only...

I concur.

Yup your right, my bad, completely forgot about that from reading up last week.

I requested a demo but haven't heard anything back as of yet. Do they offer a local storage option for faster short term recovery or is it all Wan only?

Also what are the retention times / GFS, I see they say unlimited but is it truly?

Unlimited snapshots with a 7 year retention iirc. There is an local storage option, though i've not personally used it.

May also be of value to you to know that you can ask for any of your RedStor accounts to have deletion capability removed. So that the only way anything can be deleted, is by request to support. Also the way their deletions work, is that when you delete a backup, it goes from the dashboard, but it's retained in their second datacenter for X amount of time (I feel like this was 14 days, but i might be making that up) so support can restore it in that time if it's done maliciously or by accident.

I've used a Synology NAS for the local copy of the server backups, not really needed to be honest I don't think, but its not doing any harm. I tested restoring a server (about 200GB) from both the online backup and local, it took about 30 minutes from the online copy and 15 mins form the NAS.

Redstor don't provide any storage, you would have to use your own NAS or something.
