Sonic007 Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Been a while since I looked at Ad Blockers. One time everyone was using Ad Block Plus then switched to UBlock. What's everyone using now? Thankyou.
Cat_Jam148 Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Still rocking UBlock Origin here - haven't had any reason to switch! 1
Rob_D Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 I still use ABP at home. At work, the smoothwall is set block a lot of ads. 1
Frodo_Baggins Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 +1 for uBlock Origin, been solid since released and have it on all machines at home! 1
sigma Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 uBlock, Noscript , ABP variously at home depending on browsers. The school filtering blocks a few and I havw added more. 1
Sonic007 Posted February 6, 2023 Author Posted February 6, 2023 About a year or so ago I switched from AdBLock Plus to UBlock Origin. Good to see it is still liked by many. I think I'll stick with it. Thankyou.
mavhc Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 uBlock origin, deployed to all work computers 1
LeMarchand Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Don't deploy any at work, but on "my" machines have Ublock and PrivacyBadger and selectively wipe cookies on browser close.. In addition to those, use NoScript and DuckDuckGo at home (also use DDG as my search engine). Mobile: Firefox + Ublock (set to wipe cookies on "Quit" because it won't do it on "swipe to close") as my "get things done" browser, DDG as my "look stuff up"/default one. 1
jthompson Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 uBlock Origin here, allowlisted so that staff can add it if they want. On my personal mobile (Android) I use the free version of Blokada, which blocks adds and trackers systemwide. 2
LeMarchand Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 On my personal mobile (Android) I use the free version of Blokada, which blocks adds and trackers systemwide. Not heard of that before, but downloading it! Hate it when apps are obviously using a built-in browser so they can get tracking.
elsiegee40 Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Not heard of that before, but downloading it! Hate it when apps are obviously using a built-in browser so they can get tracking. It’s not free on iOS.
LeMarchand Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 It’s not free on iOS. Are you suggesting that I would use an Apple device? Take that back this instant! It looks like you have to go down the apk route for the free Android version (officially allowed) so that's a "weekend job" for me.
jthompson Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Yeah, it used to be available via F-Droid, but not any longer.
PaddyNewman Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Basic Linux DNS server running PiHole which is pretty good. Forward school/home DNS to PiHole and then PiHole to root servers, has been working really well for me. Means less garbage on my machine/browser personally. 2
sigma Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Although our school filter supports ad-blocking, some of the worst are whitelisted by the ISP so I've had to overide them to stop the "Do you want to meet women" ads, which are obviously not appropriate in school.
mavhc Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 If you don't force install an adblocker at work, why?
jthompson Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 If you don't force install an adblocker at work, why? I wouldn't want to force install it without prepping users on how to deal with broken site functionality. So to anwser your question, mostly inertia and an instinct to not add [perceived] complication for end users. 1
bknaggs Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 If you don't force install an adblocker at work, why? I block adverts in our Smoothwall instead.
Cat_Jam148 Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 (edited) I wouldn't want to force install it without prepping users on how to deal with broken site functionality. So to anwser your question, mostly inertia and an instinct to not add [perceived] complication for end users. I had the same reservations originally, but just bit the bullet at one point and deployed it. Over the last 6 years, maybe had half a dozen broken sites? And with uBlock, it's like two clicks to disable for a particular site. The cleaner and faster browsing is well worth it in my opinion. Edited February 7, 2023 by Cat_Jam148
mavhc Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 Without ad block most sites are very broken, they're full of ads, scams, promoted results 1
tmoon-mint Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 I had reservations at first on ethical grounds but then I realised that if Google and other platforms clearly have no quality control when it comes to ads why should I let them through? uBlock Origin deployed to all devices now.

I must admit, I hardly ever notice any broken sites nowadays, either, and it tends to be that uBlock gets added as a means to fixing something (e.g. ads breaking DailyMotion video). I refer back to the 'inertia' referenced in my earlier post!
mcolbourn Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 I use NextDNS on my personal and home devices. At the school we just block ads via our LightSpeed web filter. 1
