Hi,

Our business manager wants a ticketing system / project management system for our Estates team... Now, we need something super simple as these people are not techie at all.

I've found Manage Engine Service Desk Plus Professional version but sadly its extremely expensive (over £1500 per year for 4 licenses).

Any ideas what we might be able to use....

Cheers!

I was quoted much less for 3 techs, cant see how it jumps up by £1000 unless there is an expensive project management addon.

ManageEngine ServiceDesk plus cloud professional edition - Annual Billing fee for 3 Techs and 250 Nodes - £530/year.

We use the Helpdesk part of Schoolcloud's Room Booking System for our Premises and IT team. Easy to use and provides a booking system for rooms, laptops, chromebooks, mini bus, etc.

OSTicket - Works great for us, we migrated our IT and Dev team of 9 people to use it and about 6 months ago our data team (30+) also moved to it. Works great, as simple or complex as you like.

Best of all, if you can self host, its free.

I setup another instance of SpiceWorks for my site team.
Interestingly...would you charge them any kind of maintenance fee/internal fee for maintaining their system?

Absolutely not. They don't charge me for making sure electricity gets to the server running it. I don't mean to sound rude, but this seems a bizarre question to me.

It's to do with internal recharging of support costs which some schools do - especially with the most demanding/time-consuming departments or those that damage kit.

Not necessarily. If it required another server, or server licence for a virtual instance, or if they subsequently needed tablets so they could update jobs on-the-go, which budget would they come out of? And they might not charge directly for the electricity but it does obviously come out of your school’s operating budget, reducing the amount available to allocate to you and other departments…

If they wanted some all singing all dancing thing with tablets and goodness knows what then clearly that is over and above and they can pay. I simply installed a free product which is why I found it an odd question.

No it was a valid question. We're here to share experiences and different ways of doing things after-all.

But your time isn't free. Your time spent doing that for them isn't free.

It was mainly for internal recharging of cost questions for operational purposes.

Its the project management side of this which makes it more difficult - we use Freshdesk on the blossom tier(~£360/yr for 2 techs) but this is purely ticketing, it does a fantastic job.

I've been looking at managengine servicedesk plus but you end up looking at the enterprise edition when project management comes into it.

I’m using trial version of harryfox and mojo, you can manage through the app as well.

Although very expensive

Cons - Lots! Examples include:

Lying support staff - Promise they'll ring back at a time with an update and never do. When we rang back to query this we get a different agent who completely tells us the opposite of what the first promised to do had been done. Ring back after this is missed again, and get a third story

Account manager/"head support" - Make lots of promises, but none are ever completed. As again, no other schools have ever requested these

Agent doesn't work properly, including proven bugs in it, and they just blame everything about our network from the wifi to 4g to devices to processes. Apparently 13th gen iphones/modern android, all have problems on our side

Claim it's only ever our school that has these issues, put us in touch with one of their "golden schools" who confirm every issue we've raised, and Parago still claim they don't have any problems

No-one who understands their own product. Raised issues with bugs in agent both windows/chromebook, no-one who seems to be able to replicate it or update the code, despite showing them proof multiple times

Manual processes for most things, including having to continue to use a seperate spreadsheet as their system is so inflexible

Reports break if you try to export too many items as they're still all based on old spreadsheets with limits etc. It doesn't reflect that when you run a report though and we only found this out after having all our reports incorrectly calculated

Having to disable multiple things like the agents auto-move because we need to split IT and Site items separately as their system can't support them being in the same room if they're being audited by different teams as they automatically get moved to missing

Different app required to audit items in a certain way, so now we have to use both the parago and facilities despite being IT only

Android/iPhone app is different, with one requiring "a pause of unknown length between scanning" to make it work properly, and the other flagging warnings after every scan

etc etc many more :p but you get the picture!

See my previous thread http://www.edugeek.net/forums/enterprise-software/225470-parago-assets-useless-software-support-anyone-else-still-using.html from December, that we're still waiting for them to bother resolving, as they're still refusing that they have any problems. This is now getting on 2 years I've been here and we have yet to have much resolved at all

Pros... Umm

Still waiting to find one...

You missed a few Cons, where at times users can't login as it trys to match their credentials with the wrong DB but works fine a few seconds later and that the URL changes randomly *every* time you click anything on the site ;)

Alas we use Parago for Site issues across the Trust, and while we have the App and Asset stickers on all the IT kit (even though we told the guy not to sticker the PC's) we have zero intention of using it for IT support. Would rather use Freshdesk which has a nicer interface for users and can also accept e-mail ticket submissions

Used Solarwinds WebHelpDesk, previously. Good system, if a bit of an old fashioned UI, but expensive to setup. Currently looking at FreshDesk/Service. Looked at TopDesk but that was a bit OTT for what we needed.

Ohh and originally the school was looking at Parago but it didn't sit right with me so I'm glad my gut was valid.
