Badaz52 Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Hi Everyone, Our LA has just informed me that they are pulling their DNS service in September. They have asked me to find a DNS registrar then provide the LA with the IPS tag and they will begin the migration, presumably because I can't transfer the domain myself. The problem is I can't find anyone that doesn't require me to buy a domain first before signing up. The domain in question is a .sch.uk one. Any advice on how to do this? We do own a .com domain as well although this is secondary and I can just remove the LA' nameservers off it so that one is more straight-forward. Of course I could change our entire domain now and just use our .com one but I think that is a lot of work!
Boredguy Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Krystal has been mentioned as a free DNS service that can handle the .sch.uk domains previously
Primus Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 You can manage the domain yourself through Nominet and CloudFlare do DNS. So ask the LA to transfer the domain to your Nominet account or send Nominet a letter signed by the head asking for the transfer. Then in the Nominet control panel point the domain to the 2 CloudFlare DNS hosts they give you and set all your DNS entries on CloudFlare. No cost to any of this. 2
k9mjl Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 https://www.tsohost.com/ We use TSO to host our SCH.UK domain.

MrKJLS Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 I use Cloudflare to host sch.uk domains and it works really well
Jcx500 Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 I use cloudns for personal hosting its free up to 500k requests a month I believe , not sure if they support sch.uk though. I can recommend azure dns as well
localzuk Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 We use TSOHost for our domain registrations, and Azure DNS for hosting the DNS records. Azure costs a little bit, but works well for us.
mavhc Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Nominet and https://www.namecheap.com/domains/freedns/ here Someone that supports LetsEncrypt DNS would be good though, then I could get a wildcard cert
KevinB Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 https://www.tsohost.com/ We use TSO to host our SCH.UK domain. +1 for TSOHost. Really easy to use and is free for .sch.uk.
NokiX Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 IMO you have two options, you either want to move to a provider that provides free DNS and the option for other services should you need them in future -or- move the domain directly to Nominet and manage DNS using a service such as cloudflare. The first option would be easier if you wanted everything in a single location but if you don't mind splitting things up, Nominet & Cloudflare would work well. I can also confirm Krystal does have a free DNS service.
pete Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 We use Krystal for our registrar. On pricing they can control (so hosting, not domain names), Krystal also offer a 50% "you're a school" discount. US-based companies also work if you point them at something like this: https://media.nominet.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/27104952/Schools_Domain_Name_Rules.pdf to explain how school.region.sch.uk subdomains work.

The Krystal discount only applies if the school is also a registered charity, you can either get a free Amethyst package or 50% discount on hosting products.
chaplic Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 Our council does the DNS, its in MS Azure and is trivially cheap, may work if you have things there already.
MicrodigitUK Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 Nominet will allow you to set and manage sch.uk domains directly with them free of charge. So set up a nominet account (basicly link an email address) send them a email asking to link the sch.uk domain to that Nominet account on school letter head sighted by head. Then once change is prosessed it shows in portal, you can then set dns to Cloud Flare DNS servers and set up a free cloud flare account. Manage all the DNS entries from cloud flare. No need to give the LA a tag as Nominet will do it all for you if you have the signed letter from headteacher as sch.uk domains belong to the school not the LA and are free for life including basic management (change your dns provider) via Nominet web portal. So combine that with a free DNS like cloud flare an no costs involved.
Oaktech Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 TSOHost... Free 99yr DNS management for sch.uk domains
mavhc Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 Seems that cloudflare do support ACME DNS https://certbot-dns-cloudflare.readthedocs.io/en/stable/ sweet
