penfold Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 I previously bought a NAS drive to perform my backups of local files a few years back now. Unfortunately instead of being used as backup, this has become shared storage and now I need to put in place a proper (new) backup solution. When I first did this I used a copy script, but now I also have my wifes laptop to consider so I am looking into a universal solution to put in place on my desktop and my wifes laptop. I will be looking to backup basically normal files but most of the content will be pictures/videos I would guess. I have another spare USB drive that I have shared but I want to set up a proper backup solution rather than just a copy/past script. I'm interested to know what people are using? Only free options are something I will be looking at. In the past I relied upon OneDrive storage, but this has become a no go due to the limitation in storage. I'm guessing there will be a lot of rubbish (I mean very important files) being backed up by my wife, so my preference would be a local drive rather than cloud based. I have used Veeam in the past, but I just looked at the download and it was 6.5GB so I'm not sure if it's a little overkill here. Any suggestions?

ITGuyNW Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 I'm looking at home backup stuff too. Ideally to somewhere online but when I tried the "simple" solution of Googles own backup and sync it was very unreliable.

I use something called Synchredible that is easy enough for me to understand/control and free.

Davit2005 Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 Having lost data before I backup to AWS along with to another NAS onsite daily. I use the free software on my NAS to do both. One NAS as shared storage the other for backups. Non-Important/Non-Personal stuff is backed up to external HDDs/SDDs and taken to work once a week or so.

I only want to backup Windows 10 folders/files and need a client on each machine so don't have to have something running 24/7 I'll take another look at Veeam. aicrd Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 Duplicati works really well for this. Can backup to Azure, Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, etc. It has deduplicated backups so never copies the same files twice. Saves a lot of bandwith for me.

Ideally I'd like to know that at least the backups will be separated enough not to be encrypted by malware or just plain deleted by another house member not knowing better
mavhc Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 Can bitlocker the external drive I suppose. Or encrypt the nas drives. Protecting from deletion/malware is a question though. I backup to my nas, which has zfs, and the root user on the nas can create/delete the zfs snapshots, the backup user has no access to that.
