Login then black screen

I have a W10 PC that works fine when I log in, however, for a few members of staff as soon as they login the screen goes black. I can do CNTL-ALT-DEL and run Chrome, but ifI try and run explorer.exe it just crashes straight back out, no desktop icons ever appear for them.

 

I have completely wiped and rebuilt the machine, and thought it was working ok, but one of the previous problem users logged in and we are back to the black screen issue. I have a 'test' account and that can login fine.

 

Any ideas? I am flummoxed.

 

Its one of those tiny Micro sized PCs from Stone, if that makes any difference.

When I have had this issue I told them to just leave it as it was probably pulling some updates and after time it has loaded, but as you have rebuilt that may not be the issue, I would look at the size of their profile.

Does a dummy account do the same?

Would it be something like a user profile (if you use roaming maybe) or GPO issue linked with those specific users?

Had a similar issue, but it happened on bootup before the login page. That was due to a massive 300GB NTUser.DAT file for the system, might be worth looking to see how big their individual one is in their profile.

You can try deleting their user profile normally and from registry. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

The old "allow local profile only" I hope is set via GPO. and ctrl+alt+shift+b black screen issues key combo.

We moved Win10 at summer.

 

Myself and my technician both have the black screen issue but as our two stations are still Win7 we’ve not bothered addressing it yet!

we have had a few machines do this. I have a suspicion it is to do with the intel onboard drivers. When this happens to us, the black screen usually has a white mouse pointer than you can move around (nothing to click on of course). I get the user to CTRL-ALT-DEL which brings up the usual options screen, I ask them to log out and immediately log back in. That has sorted it everytime for me.

Yep. We’ve had this issue on all staff computers we don’t actually have a wsus server. We are trying to get that up and running we just ran a script I think.

 

But it’s a nightmare I found out that it does that in the 20h2 update so that is probably why you get black screen after logon
