LeMarchand Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 Very relieved to hear there is a fix on the way, but out of interest, has anyone found any decent alternatives for printing contact sheet style in the way that the photo printing wizard allows? Not used it for years, and it was nowhere near as easy to use, but IIRC Irfanview can create a "contact sheet": https://www.irfanview.com/
KK20 Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 i just told our art dept to print to "microsoft PDF" -> "Acrobat reader" -> Printer as an interim. Contact sheets arent high quality by nature so this shouldnt be an issue.

KK20 Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 It has done for us. I have now imported KB5001648 (and KB5001649 for those who have 1909 still) into WSUS for the majority. Set deadline to yesterday etc.

This fault is a nightmare to Google, as you get lost in years and years of people complaining about poor print quality in general. Testing KB5001648 on our 1909 environment now, fingers crossed.

Hopefully will solve the issues we've been having with stripy printing. When the first teacher reported they had printing with white stripes in the middle, I was humming "Seven Nation Army" for the rest of the day... 1

Emailed all staff to check for updates and install, then ensure their laptops are rebooted at lunch time. Come this afternoon, phone calls asking "why is my laptop updating and saying it is going to reboot? I have a very important Teams meeting at 14:00.... Can you stop it...?" When did you know about the meeting? "This morning" When did you see my email? "Just before lunch" Did you do what I asked? "No I was having my lunch"... Glad it's Friday!

DavR Posted March 23, 2021 Posted March 23, 2021 Installing 1648 on Win 10 1909 has fixed the problem for us. It's an optional update, so you'll either need to choose it when downloading updates from Microsoft, or, add it to your WSUS manually, which is what we did.

Then I got the updated KB pushed out... Got a teacher with the white bars issue... Imported final KB into WSUS and pushed out... no more issues since! I haven't installed any of these latest updates generally . Regarding this... how are you avoiding these updates getting installed. How many people have WSUS... and which updates do you manually approve or have automatic approvals on?

I push all updates out through PDQ. I don't have WSUS installed, I just keep track of what gets released and when.
KK20 Posted March 23, 2021 Posted March 23, 2021 WSUS here, I automatically approve critical and security. The others I tend to check at the end of the week. My feeling is that it is easier to sort issues like this than have unpatched security issues in a school. WSUS also rolls out our W10 upgrades and has done so quite well.

KK20 Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 not really. if your machines download updates and install them then there is no problem other than bandwidth. I would say that the problem would only be if you DONT install updates! Since Windows 10 can peer share updates this has become less of an issue over the years. WSUS is useful but also comes with its own issues and maintenance.

We use SCCM/MECM to manage the WSUS authorisations, so it automatically approves updates based on the category and if it's not in our exclusion list (which 5000809 is). It also allowed us to easily create a script to run the DISM command to uninstall any offending updates to be removed from the workstations that gets run in the system context quite easily.

You could, but, I would search out and manually install the KB5001648 or KB5001649 fix. If you're going direct via Windows Update, I think it's an optional update, or search the KB numbers for a download.
