We want to change the title and slightly change responsibilities of the IT Manager. I just need a title for the job role and was looking to drop manager part. I'm looking for some suggestions! anything! throw it in there Director of IT and cloud solutions? The role would essentially be the same but in a serverless environment. They would be managing 1-2 techs

FishCustard Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Ultimately whether it's on-premise or cloud, it's still IT. IT Manager is still appropriate, but you could tweak it to "IT Services Manager" or "Director of IT Services" if you wanted. "Information Systems" can work too. 1

We have quite a few Directors of something on our books so i think they want something with a corporate feel to the name.

Even though the servers are moving in to cloud, surely they will still be responsible for the software administration of these cloud servers and still manage the physical network on site that you cant get away from.. Unless the whole network/server administration side is being outsourced and you only need someone to look after the end user equipment?

How could you surmise why we're restructuring from me asking for ideas for a job title A title is just a title though its what in the job spec thats the main part and thats the part we're changing so the title needs to change also. I won't go into if we're adding or removing items. Also its not my decision I've got the job spec changes sorted i'm just stuck on ideas for the job title.

When trust gets to a certain size do you start thinking of having a role that is solely for development? I know that in a single/ small trust dev roles are essentially any spare time that the IT/network manager (or director of) has. That leads me on to the next question at what point do you guys find that the board level role is just that? So have to give up the technical aspects of IT and solely focus on the strategic stuff. They would be managing 1-2 techsNormally the argument is that Network Managers shouldn't be called managers because they (quite often) don't manage people, which is used as a justification for keeping someone with a senior level of responsibility (managing business critical infrastructure) on a technician's salary. In this case, they do have line management responsibilities. Without knowing what the driver is for the name change, it's difficult to give the most appropriate suggestion. If it's your own job and you're trying to ensure that you get credit for the level of responsibility I'd suggest something different than if you're a manager trying to re-grade a job with a perceived lower level of difficulty.
Ditto Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Chief Technology Officer (CTO) In commerce, that title would often require board level involvement, but sometimes controversially it doesn't. DevOps Manager appears to be the in phrase in that world nowadays.
HPlum78 Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Yeah interesting DevOps as a role its really a methodology, I develop to this methodology myself but am not called a DevOps Engineer/ Manager! I am not sure that it is a defining name for being serverless either. I do say this about job titles, you can call me what you want as long as you pay me my money! Its too easy to get caught up in a title I bet that 99.9 % of this forum do not do the job that our titles describe. As I threw into the mix earlier I think as schools and trusts grow the hierarchy changes and more specific roles need to be defined and filled.
