👮 Scam phone calls and texts

One the point of what the law enforcement people are doing to stop these people

 

As people are aware I am retired so I have time to watch TV in the mornings. There has been a programme on recently - although I think it has now stopped and been replaced by a similar one - about these scams and what is being done about it

 

They have had 'ethical hackers' helping them identify scams and stop them. One programme had an ethical hacker who was somehow connected to a suspected scam call centre's computer system and could see numbers they were ringing and hear the conversation.

They waitied until the phone was free and then tried to ring the potential victim and tell them the person they had just been talking to was scamming them

 

A lot of them were romance scams.

 

In all cases they have reported it all to a specialist Police unit - which apparently exists in every area.

 

Of course, how well they are resourced is another matter - but apparently they do exist

I think that is quite common - I listed my old ebike on Guntree for £400

 

next day got a phone call offering £200 - he got quite abusive when I said he would have to increase the offer - seemed to think that if I was selling it them I must be desperate for the money and should go down on my knees thanking him for his generosity

Just had someone "checking our appliance insurance was up to date so they could send out an updated agreement". They told me that they only did kitchen appliances when I asked about my 3D printer, home server and holo projector and when I said they'd have to remove the TV as we only had one in the living room it totally threw them. You'd think they'd agree to pretty much anything to get your account details...

Had the standard call from Virgin media just now - apparently they have had loads of warning on their system saying our broadband is having problems

 

etc etc

 

now been feeling too good for a while and I have no energy to get anything done

so I had time to talk to them

 

so I did - haven't done that for ages

 

he wanted me to start Chrome - which I said I didn;t have so he resorted to the old windows R route to check WWW speed via a site I hadn;t heard of

so I mis-spelt it - but he could figure out that I had misspelt it from the error message

(honestly - he will get nowhere with me if he can;t spot mis spelling and grammar mistakes!!!!!)

anyway - resorted to speedtest.net - which I know so that is OK

 

got the upload and download speed - except that I multiplied them both by 5 and told him that instead

 

which he claimed showed I was having major problems and my speed was VERY low

(497 Mbps!!!!!)

 

he seemed a bit confused at the download speed but still kept on with his claim that it was slow

 

a little bit after that he sussed that I was not the confused old man that he thought and started swearing at me

I told him he ring me and lied to me

 

apparently it was all my fault because I answered the phone!!!

 

 

 

got up to 30 minutes

 

to be honest my tea was ready to drink by then anyway

 

 

cheered me up no end

Was wondering whether to let them know they had the wrong number, as it seemed a bit of an odd way to phish (maybe catfish?) and they might be waiting in vain for a friend; then remembered I'd lent my phone to someone I was working with who couldn't get a signal!

Just had a stunningly incompetent Amazon spam call.

Surely even a scammer with the brains of a dead fish knows that they would need to start by establishing the identity of the person picking up the phone?

Just seen a post on another forum

 

The poster had received a phone call from a bloke he knows from the pub

bit of general chat - nothing unusual

 

'happened' to include, after a while, the 'fact' that this bloke had just won a lottery done by Bill and Melindar Gates

although it could have been any organisation of celebrity

and all he had to do was forward an email and the poster could enter the lottery as well - and almost certainly get counted in as it was all done my recommendation

 

 

 

Clearly the 'bloke on the phone' was not the person he claimed to be

 

but the poster is a well know person on the forum and doesn;t seem to be dumb so the scammer must have done it really well

 

He had the sense to ask on teh forum if it might be a scammer before clicking on a link in the email

when people asked him more question he remembered a question about a local football club that the scammer had ummed and ahhed about - which the real person would not have done

 

but it was good enough to make him play along and go as far as looking at the email

 

 

 

so I thought I would post this in case there is a new scam method around - which some people might fall for

people on here will probably not - but IT people get asked about stuff so it is good to be aware

Needless to say, she is not old enough to have a child old enough to be in this predicament… and as you can gather she has a bit of a history or losing phones herself

 

However, others get caught by this scam.

I must of had a phishing email about 20 years back from a bank I did not use so been aware of these for years

Get called everyday by "EE" asking me if I want to upgrade.

 

I even tried to ask them to take me off the scam list as they are wasting their and my time...

I've been getting a lot of scam phone calls from the US purportedly from "Interlink JAM-F" or at least that's how it sounds. Started off telling them to go away and then tried ordering them to remove my number from their list. Nothing has worked so far.

 

I've been blocking each number (17) from a dozen states so far. Either they'll run out of numbers or run out of states, I don't care which.

Just had yet another one wanting to review my life insurance. They were floored when I told them my current premium was £500/month as I'd just married a beautiful young woman (I can't believe she agreed to marry an old duffer like me!) and that she had told me that it was very important that we make sure that the other will be provided for should we pass on.
