Printer deployment via GPP

Ever since upgrading to Windows 10 we're having intermittent issues with users printers not being added via GPP. Everything is set as it should be in GP, I looked into adding Print Deploy to our PaperCut license but at £1500 I just can't justify it.

According to Google this seems to be a known issue, has anyone overcome this?

Are you deploying to computer OUs or users? Using GPP printers against computer OUs is unreliable IME, so I and may others found it more reliable to assign them to a user OU and use Item Level Targeting to drill it down.

We're targeting user OUs and item level targeting unfortunately

As a temporary fix you could deploy them via a script , we was having the same issue as you , so we switched to deploying them via a script while we looked into the issue . We also added a icon to the users desktop which would re run the script if they were still having issues.

I don't wanna use scripts if I can help it. I'm thinking of getting round the Print Deploy free limitation by adding our laser printers locally in the rooms which they're located and pushing the Follow me queue via Print Deploy

Same issue i've seen across the schools in our trust, printers are deployed via both logon script and GPP to see if any difference. Just tell the users to log off and back on if printer is missing! A pain but cannot find permanent solution.

The way I done it with Windows 7 a few years back was have the printers assigned by GPP at the Computer OU level, for example OU=Room302. Then use a Group Policy assigned to that Computer OU with the Printer Shared in the User preferences, I'd then use loopback processing on that Group Policy with a setting of Merge, as long as the computers were in the correct OU when the users logged in they got the correct printer assigned. This worked flawlessly, It worked so well that we used it during enrolment time every year following whilst I was there instead of sharing printers from one of the PCs on a table and all the issues with that setup.

 

Unfortunately I've not had exposure with Windows 10 as I no longer work in the area where I would be involved.

we had lots of problems with roaming profiles and printers on windows 10

 

in the end i used

Mapping works consistant on PC DNS names and User accounts

 

Price is so cheap which saved me so much hassle.

 

Was recommended on here ! so just passing on the info.

 

FYI , i used both GP and kixtart with windows 7 and it worked flawlessly . Windows 10 was a no go with either !
