Poll: who's putting SP3 on their summer images?

Just wondering as above, I'm making new images for deployment over the summer, most likely SP3 will be on there but heard a few bugs recently making me slightly more apprensive. Who's going for it on their 2008-09 images?

I could, but then again I wouldn't get paid for it! There's no real urgency for XP SP3 at the moment. I'm still in the testing stages and a few members have reported compatibility problems with Sims (for example).

 

Unless your machines need re-imaging then I'd probably go for it, but if you're imaging just for XP SP3 then it isn't worth it. You could quite happily do this in small batches during term time.

All new images required anyway, current ones will be 3 years old this summer and now it's my choice they're definitely being updated!

We are imaging a room & a few other machines with it tomorrow. We have had no problems what so ever with it.

 

PS: what happened to the poll?

We've done a trial run and found it takes forever to run this update, had no problems with bugs or compatbility, if you run the updates to all software you're talking about 1:30 to 2 hours. Was it worth it,only if you've got time to waste.

I'm running it on one or two machines in each room at the moment to test it on as much hardware/software as possible. So far i haven't encountered any serious issues so we'll be putting it on new PC's or ones that we rebuild to save the WSUS some work but i won't be updating our current SP2 machines for a while as i don't see the benefit currently as it's not a massive security update like SP2 was.

 

 

@ Spitfire: do you mean when you install it manually or when it's downloaded from Windows Update? I've installed it on quite a few boxes from 1GHz P3's to Core 2's and i've not had one take over 45 mins, Core 2's take less than 10.

Whacking it on the image is gonna be the best way and think it's gonna have to go on sooner or later so may as well do it the easy way

We're now including it in images. It does take a long time to install but it also takes a long time to install all the updates which are needed on our current image so it made sense to just put SP3 on the image rather than update the SP2 image with all the fixes which have come out since last summer.

 

Not seen any problems with it yet - not really any point saying "it has bugs so won't install" because pretty much all software has bugs and you'd not install anything ever if you follow that route :-)

We had a couple of laptops/pcs that needed ghosting in last 2 weeks, so we used the chance to update those images, so far not seen any problems on the few test machines, plus we are using it on 20 machines in our English area and not had any errors/bug or problems.

We will be rolling it out as and when a PC / laptop needs imaging. We won't be updating all clients to SP3 for the sake of it.

 

We haven't had any issues with SP3 up to now.

I've got 18 Dell Latitude D630s being delivered to go in my new laptop rack tomorrow.

 

Going to attempt to use my slipstreamed XP SP3 CD to format over the crappy Vista Business that comes as standard now, and then use WDS Legacy (why oh why couldn't it just stay as RIS) to make an image.

 

After that it's a matter of seeing whether the other 17 machines will take the PXE boot and install okay.

 

Will keep you guys posted as things develop.

I've rolled it out to a computer suite already to see how it goes, so far no problems. Not rolling it out to staff just yet, but that's thru time/work loads that we currently are experiencing.

Pushed it out everywhere via WSUS. Only issue we've had is when people pull the power on machines installing the Service Pack. Resulting in a nonbootable machine.

I just did 20 laptops with a base image from XPsp2, built them up with software and added XPsp3 (windows update). All looked good, no issues.

 

Until... I riprepped the image back up.

 

When it came back down, any, and i do mean any, connection of a usb device caused a bluescreen.

 

I tried with the XPsp3 .iso too. This fixed the broken build, but when i sent this one back up to the server and back to the laptop I got the same error.

 

I have not tried with a slipstreamed Base image though.

 

i eventually (3 hrs searching) found a post that suggested that i take the two files, usbehci.sys and usbport.sys from a XPsp2 install and drop them into the system32 folder of the RIS image.

 

this worked a treat!

I'm going to leave mine until I hear when the LEA are going to roll it out in their image. I've got most of the latest SP2 updates in the new image for mass deployment in the summer already. CBA to reroll the image just for SP3 just yet.

This year is a BIG image change for us so I will be adding SP3 to it if for no other reason it will save 250 machines hammering the WSUS server for 103 updates each when I start rebuilding IT suites in the summer.

 

We got an adobe CS3 site license this year and given its a pig that takes more than 40mins to install by GPO I'm going to put it in the base image along with some new java based introductory programming softwre called greenfoot which doesn't like to be run from a network share. Our current base image is more than 2 years old so I'll be creating new GPOs etc for it too for a good oldfashioned fresh start.

Just put it on the first new image, didn't take that long to install on a dual core 4200+ Athlon64 (1GB RAM). Noticed that the bott time did seem to be a bit quicker afterwards, so far so good :-)

The very reason I haven't done it via WSUS. SP3 is a job for the summer

I have deployed SP3 to all workstations and laptops already.

 

Hopefully if I do re-image this summer, depending on time constraints, I will be putting SP3 on the images.
