Enabling Teams for Students in New Admin Centre?

Hi Folks,

 

In the old Office 365 Admin Centre I enable Teams for students by going to Settings > Services & add-ins > Microsoft Teams > Settings by user/license type, change to Education - Student, and switch on (Turn Microsoft Teams on or off for all users of this type).

 

I can't find this setting in the new Teams Admin Centre. Does it exist?

I couldn't find it on the new centre, I had to go to the old and then switch students on.

 

Also be careful as it takes a good few hours to enable (up to 24 hours)

 

Once you've switched it on, just turn back on the new admin centre.

Yes go into old admin center and turn it on - it's missing in the new admin center like a lot of stuff seems to be.

We had this recently too, contacted Microsoft support - you have to turn off the new admin center and complete this step in the old admin center as this hasn't been ported to the new interface. It took closer to 48 hours for the change to kick in for us too :/

Yeah I fell foul of this as I didn't know Teams wasn't enabled for students automatically, so we setup some Teams - Adding the students, checked they had licenses only to find out they were blocked signing in. Typical Microsoft! This was after we'd emailing all the kids and sent out some info on how to log in. Luckily it came through quicker than 24 hours, maybe about 12 in the end.

They are damned if the do damned if they don't. Most complaints are about Microsoft enabling features by default, much to the ire of compliance minded administrators.

 

I too got caught by this, a quick back and forth with support and it was fixed.

Teams looks like it has lots of potential for disaster in a secondary school, so it's going to need some careful watching, and some clear instruction to students on using it appropriately.

 

Looks like a lot of it can be locked down, but almost too many settings and policies...

My students all seem to have the teams licence but are unable to use it, how do I enable just my test pupil? (and then all of them)

 

All teachers can use it just fine though but pupils get tenant disabled?

Same thing happened to me. I enabled students around midday and when I checked my test student around 10pm it was working.

You need to disable the new look admin centre and then enable a setting to allow students to use. All explained here in the note section (purple.bit)

Dammit, we had this exact same thing earlier and I didn't even see this thread - worked this out on our own after seeing several sites refer to a part of the admin center that's no longer there (no surprise, MS change 365 so bloody often it's infuriating). I was adamant I had disabled it for students yet couldn't find anywhere to suggest this was even possible!

Turned it on about 2pm today, still waiting for something to happen

I’d imagine that demand for Teams is somewhat similar to the huge demand for bog roll currently - no problems at all in the supply chain until several thousand schools all try to enable it at once. Impressive that it hasn’t broken (yet), but I wait to see how it copes with it later on!

Hah, yup no doubt We're enabled now, but at least the demand for Teams/Hangouts etc is an intelligent one borne of forward planning and contingency rather than blind panic

it wont licence them but it will enable any students that have the licence assigned to them (temas is part of the default office 365 licence so you should be ok)

We used the ruler.co.uk app to bulk apply licenses. Worked well but it costs.

The UI is better than it was, it does allow selecting of hundreds of students at a time to add licenses. Ours already had them, thankfully!
