War of the Worlds always fascinated but terrified the pants off me when I was little. Loved the Jeff Wayne album and all the cover art but I remember having to go eat in the Kitchen one time when the film was on!! I'm hoping I can get through this one.

The book, if any of you haven't read it is a fascinating look into the late Victorian era, and how things were a lot slower pre-mechanisation. It took the army days to arrive to the initial landing side IIRC.

**WARNING HERE BE SPOILERS**

 

I finally got to watch this the other night and all I can say is prepared to be dissapointed. Very, very dissapointed.

The opportunity to give HG Well's masterpiece the credit it deserves with the first ever 'true' adaptation has been squandered.

The writer of the mini-series, Peter Harness has been quoted as saying “The version of The War of the Worlds that I wanted to make is one that’s faithful to the tone and the spirit of the book, but which also feels contemporary, surprising and full of shocks: a collision of sci-fi, period drama and horror.” and from this we get a mess that has 21'st century values firmly stamped all over it.

 

The main protagonist, the always unnamed Journalist is now a wet, almost bit-part character who meets a fate, his main plot driver Carrie, is now a strong woman (nothing wrong with that) who has a 21st century attitude and is now the focus of the story. All authority figures (men) are portrayed as nasty, incompetent, bullying types.

And forget cylinders, Thunderchild, bear sized Martians, the parson, artilleryman, slow build-ups on Horsall Common and basically any of the main scenes of the book.

It all just comes off as a very anti-British, anti-empire, anti-military mess (lots of over the top jingoism) and probably only a third, okay, I'll be generous and say up to a half of the program is actually about the 'invasion'.

 

The whole thing comes across as a guilt driven political rant whilst stomping all over the ruins of one of the greatest works of science fiction ever written.

As a history buff I was also annoyed to see that whilst they showed lots of people smoking cigarettes, no one had a pipe. Cigarettes didn't become a popular way of consuming tobacco until after WW1, which was many years beyond when this was set. It just showed a lack of research into the period all this was supposed to have taken place in and I took to be an indicator of just how little attention and care they paid to detail

.

There is also very little to be seen of the tripods, or possibly not enough compared to the book and the set-piece battles/scenes described in them.

All in all, it seems like someone had the chance to make something epic and decided to put their own mark on it but in the process lost everything that made the original material great.

Oh! And 200ft tall tripods just don't appear suddenly and surprise you, you should generally be able to hear and feel these things coming a mile away!

Anyway, rant over. I'm sure a lot of you will watch this, but be very prepared for what you expect to be not the case.

That's what you get for skim-reading! I saw the broadcast dates on Wikipedia but assumed they were UK.

UK date: Sunday November 17th at 9pm, which puts it after the third ep of His Dark Materials, I think.

Bitterly disappointed by this, pretty much the whole of the first episode setting pointless back stories of characters, dodgy cgi etc

 

Love the original story, this looks like the remake that didn’t really need to be remade, even the Tom Cruise movie was better than this...

I've tried to like this, I really have but now cba to watch the final part. The time hoping with the female character revealing the end and the zombifying of the people caught in the black smoke were the final straws...

I also don't understand why they needed to add in the "post apocalyptic world" bit - if anything, show us the Martians and their civilisation, that would be really new. We don't need yet another post-apocalyptic story.

I'm yet to watch the second episode, but the first was 80% period romantic drama, 20% almost War of the Worlds. What is all this relationship nonsense? This is supposed to be about a guy battling to get to his love, not giving us the entire backstory to why he loves her...
