Which Windows 10 Profiles?

We have always used roaming profiles with ever since XP days. Now looking at Windows 10 and reading that Roaming profiles, although supported in the short term could get deprecated in the near future. Also having problems re-directing Start Menu with roaming profiles so currently looking at using local profiles.

I also read the UE-V may get dropped by Microsoft too.

So the poll is to find out what people are using.

We're just using local profiles and haven't had any issues. Sure, a couple of things are stored in the profile, but there isn't that much anymore. I have worked in schools previously where we've had roaming profiles for Windows XP/7 but since 10, I've not bothered.

We use roaming profiles and don't have many issues (the odd bit of corruption which has always happened, even way back in the XP days). That said, we could probably switch to local and users wouldn't much care. Might trial it at some point.

we just use Local Profiles the one and only really annoying thing for us is outlook since MS droped the office customization of outlook profiles for our exchange server... i keep thinging of turning UE-V back on but i may wait till the newer profile manager becomes a thing... we have not used romaing profiles for years (since XP) and always just use local ones back in windows 7 days again years ago we did use a older version of UE-V....

I'm using local profiles for staff and mandatory profiles for students.

 

All use a redirected Start Menu with no issues.

 

Eventually I would like to switch to all local profiles and UE-V but this is on my to do list when I have time.

Yes, we do exactly this.

 

Unfortunately due to recent Adobe announcement we may have to remove redirected app data for some users (if that is even possible) as we were using older versions of Adobe CC that would play ball with that setup

We do not redirect Application Data, we've had no reason so. There are only a handful of applications that store necessary data in Application Data and even fewer staff who use those apps.

 

We do run DelProf on student machines, though it's set to only remove profiles from machines that haven't been used in more than 14 days. Generally we don't run DelProf on staff/admin machines unless we have do (usually for a corrupted profile).

Same as we had on 7 - mandatory for pupils (keeps local storage down) and local for staff (quick logons). No Appdata redirection as it caused issues with Adobe CS among others.

Local profiles for all. Redirected App Data/Documents/etc... Delprof on pupil machines, to clear profiles and keep local disks clear.

So redirecting App Data causes issues with Adobe CC? As part of our Windows 10 rollout we are also introducing latest Adobe CC where previously we had Adobe CS5.

It mostly worked with CS5, but we found it didn't work with CS6 - not sure since then but I know Adobe haven't supported it and I suspect it will have been problematic on every release since then.

yes we copy delprof2.exe to the windows folder via GPO and as a startup script run it with /d:10 /u

I've always had problems with Roaming and do without.

We use local profiles for pupils and staff. But i have made pupils AD accounts members of "Domain Guest" so that when pupils log off, their profile is also cleared off.

For the ones who are saying local profiles, how are you managing it with hundreds of pupils logging on various machines? We are about to make the Windows 10 jump but deciding on profile type is proving a sticking point.

We’ve a shutdown Powershell script which deals with profiles and cleans them out.
