We are at the moment seriously considering a move from in house server based Sims.net to Capita Hosted Sims.net. Has any body here got recent experience of using Capita Hosted Sims.net, are there any issues eg performance connectivity etc?

From my experience, I think it come down to how many SIMS users you have in your organisation. I have two sites using hosted SIMS with half a dozen or so users at each site and it works for them. I have also supported large secondary schools that have over 100 SIMS users and would never recommend hosted SIMS in its current form for an organisation of this size.

We thought the access from anywhere feature is one feature our staff could benefit from. money required for replacement admin server could be re purposed.

Please guys tell me what issues you have experienced.

you can have access from anywhere by deploying it via remoteapps from your own servers. Once you've setup a remoteapp server you'll find loads of other things you can deploy the same way - so probably not a wasted investment at all.

With Capita taking literal weeks to respond to helpdesk calls do you really want your SIMS deployment dependent on them rather than within your own control?

Once you work out how many Sims users you have and times that by the licensing youl be paying mega money!

Unless you have just a few users and dont have any other packages (eg. FMS) then stay away.

The licensing costs appear to be sufficient to buy a server, if that's your reasoning. However, your server will be quicker and more reliable, so it's not really a contest.

I've got sites hosted with both Capita and SCOMIS. From what I've seen the sites hosted with SCOMIS are a lot happier. They get there support direct from SCOMIS not Capita as well. Costs are pretty much identical.

Ew - Don't do this. Once again *Don't do this*

Hosted SIMS is a trainwreck. Either wait for proper SIMS in the cloud (Web based not the horrible RDP based offering they have at the moment) or setup RemoteDesktop for your in house solution instead.

Awful when one of our schools tried it. Look for arbour or another modern MIS instead!

I avoided going down another MIS route as it could derail the thread and I'm assuming the OP isn't wanting to consider that. However, if you do want to consider other MIS providers, there are threads out there. Sorry to be picky, but if you do it's Arbor without the 'u'.

The OP didn’t say. But sims is bad enough. Hosted sims is a bag of hurt. At least where I saw it (not) in use.

And yes I always end up putting the u in Arbor!

PSFinancials offer their cloud based product on RDP but they also expose some functionality as a web app! A little bit like CMIS and e-Portal I guess

RDP part is “Same Old Software as a Service” SoSaaS -fake cloud and not SaaS.

There are now also school finance software products that are true cloud!

I'm interested to know what those are as I have a school that is looking for a finance product and they were largely cloud based already.

There are mentioned under different thread.

Yep always important to understand the difference between some hosted bodge job of a legacy system and full Software as a Service cloud products.

I said elsewhere, a hosted bodge job of a legacy system is fake cloud!

Just like when flat screen TVs came out and, rather than buying a flat screen TV, you dig a recess into your living room wall and have your old tube TV flat with your wall, saying you have a flat screen TV. But then you expect to see the characteristics, features and performance of a flat screen TV.

A move from in house server based PS Financial or Sims.net to Hosted version is exactly as above.

Best to avoid fake cloud like plague!
