I may try Netflix for a month (so we can watch/play the new Black Mirror), and was wondering how ppl access it before I experiment and the missus gets annoyed with me for not leaving it alone Attached to the TV I have the following netflix compatible devices (the TV itself, and blu ray player are too old for the netflix app) ps3 ps4 PC Virgin Tivo sadly blu tooth no longer works on ps3, so the blu mote remote won't work any more, and have to use a controller cabled ps4 - would have to use controller so a bit cumbersome PC - i could maybe set up the ps3 blumote with that, I've used that with vlc on the pc, not sure you can configure for netflix? I've also got wireless logitech keyboard with built in mousepad. virgin Tivo box - seems most sensible - can use the remote as a normal remote, but bbc iplayer I've found to be a bit hit and miss, I remember a couple of times 5 mins into a sit com giving up and using the ps3 iplayer app instead, or pc as it kept stuttering (I've understood what netflix and chill means right )

sparkeh Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 What generation of TiVo box do you have? The old style Samsung box was junk but the performance of Netflix (and iPlayer) on the v6 box is superb (for us anyway) and beats any of our other ways to access Netflix.
jmak Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 If you stick with Netflix, it might be worth trying a Chromecast; searching for content and controlling the player is much easier with your phone than a remote that's not designed for typing. Works with Android a iOS.

I have an older TiVo virgin box, read elsewhere that it's rubbish for Netflix, but new box is great. I've signed up for free trial, just for new Black Mirror really, do don't really want to spend more money the input is useful, means I'll try ps4 first, rather than faff with other options and get annoyed, thanks Edited December 31, 2018 by admars

You've got no storage to download and play, but that's never been a problem for me.. I always stream.
admars Posted December 31, 2018 Author Posted December 31, 2018 (edited) Interestingly, when I go to use the app on the Virgin Tivo box, and try to watch the new Black Mirror, it warns me that the interactive stuff won't work, so I'll use PS4 and app, and it looks like I can use either the netflix app on my phone, or use the ps4 second screen app on the phone as a remote! bon_clay Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 You may be able to use your regular TV remote on the PS4 just make sure that HDMI Device Link is enabled on the PS4 then test your remote on the ps4. There maybe a button on the remote that enables it here are some common names for the feature Sony: Bravia Link or Bravia Sync Samsung: Anynet Panasonic: Viera Link Sharp: Aquos Link LG: SimpLink 1

I like the Echo too, I always thought it was a great product and my partner got me a Product (Red) Echo for Christmas this year which looks lovely and supports a cause I support, but as much as I like the echo, there's some real concerns around that here and there :-\
DanTheLacky Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 Ps4, the TiVo app performance sucks I am not with Virgin anymore, however I was going to write exactly this. I use to go and get my phone from another room, look for a program I wanted to watch on that, then just search the first few letters on the tv box as it was always so slow. I have Netflix on a PS3, a PS4, smart TV and a amazon fire stick (the last one is a little bit clunky but miles better than my old tivo box).

However, so far, nothing has com close to using the netflix app for our TV (LG 43UH620V). Same goes for iPlayer, both work much better natively than via another connected device.

True, the Plex app on my LG is so nice that I've not bothered setting up the Harmony remote, just use the tv remote, it auto turns on the amp and picks the input, or plays files from network and outputs audio via ARC, tv sends volume control signals via CEC to amp 1
