Wireless AP naming convention

Will be starting to install some new APs next year and wondered how do people name their APs?

 

Currently our APs are named by location only, but someone suggested possibly naming them by location/switch

Ours are sequentially numbered starting at 1. Not a plan that I like particularly as students have 'disappeared' one and another went missing after a false ceiling was installed. Now there are gaps in my AP numbering system. Not happy.

 

BTW: I didn't choose this method on numbering the APs.

Doesnt matter as long as you draw a map.

 

Our rooms keep changing names which makes this a flipping nightmare for me.

Location - AP - Number for us

 

E.g.

We name them with their Asset Tag number followed by their location, that way if we ever need to bring one back for repair/replacement we know exactly where it came from etc. and it cant get mixed up.

Room numbers don't change which is helpful so for example an access point at The Generic School in room R1 would be GS-AP-R1

Why do primary schools number their classrooms with the year group and then the teachers initials?????

Year 4 and Miss Smith - class 4S. So you write all your paperwork and wap location up and she leaves a month later and it's all meaningless.

We have a fair sized wifi network so in order to keep track of them we use the following scheme:

 

1st part- Site code (E or D)

2nd part - Cabinet ID where the patching and switch is

3rd part - patch panel port number

4th part - switch ID

5th part - switch port

6th part - Room number

 

So a concrete example is:

 

D-IT4-01-P01-44-A1

 

Deans

IT4 cab

Patch panel port 1

Switch P01

Port 44

Art room 1

 

This way whenever anything fails it's all in the name of the AP where to check any hardware issues.

Just a sequential number for us. Locations aren't always intuitive as we may have them in corridors between rooms. They're UniFi so we have them on a map in UniFi controller. The IT inventory also lists their locations and exact positioning (since they may not be visible).

 

This means we can reposition them a bit without having to worry about the name.

 

Our network monitoring (Check_MK) and RackTables will show us what switch and port they patch to.

and then on a spreadsheet, AP Name, IP, ethernet Mac, Serial number, patch port, switch, switch port.

 

On the Switch the port is named against as per the AP and port.

We have a naming convention that goes like: room/kit type/kit number

 

Room: L8

Kit Type: AP

Kit number: 01

 

Name: L8AP01

Ours are prefixed APX-ROOMNUMBER where X refers to the model number. They're then logged on spreadsheet with serial number, mac address location and such.

Ours are BUILDING-ROOM(AREA) so something like RHS-712. There are labels on the ceiling grid identifying the network closet and patch panel port for that ethernet drop.

 

Of course, we keep all the details for each wireless access point in our asset management software, Lansweeper.

Location, easy to understand shortened forms. i.e. Building/Block/Floor or room and an Incremental AP number.

Very unimaginative I know but I've got a spreadhsheet with AP / IP / Location / Network Cab / Port etc so it's easy to work out whats where.
