Popular Post LeMarchand Posted November 8, 2018 Popular Post Posted November 8, 2018 Okay, even though I think some people may be fibbing about the specs of their current machines, I am not. The specs of one are included in the below. The first part of this tale can be found here. P.S. The semi-repeated line was always meant as an ongoing joke; not just pandering to the audience! Stave two When he finally dared to open his eyes, The Technician was surprised to see that it no longer appeared to be Winter, and that the apparition was beckoning him to climb a flight of stairs. With mounting trepidation, The Technician obeyed his ghostly companion’s summons; realising as he approached the phantom that they were at one of his schools. “Go. Observe,” commanded the spectre. The Technician reached for the door handle, and was startled to see his hand pass clean through it. “Am I too a phantom?” he wondered. Steeling himself, he walked forward, passing through the door to his office with an unpleasant wrench. Before him, The Technician saw himself, working at a computer and making notes. But had he ever looked this young? This carefree? This happy? The Technician looked at the screen that his younger self was working on and realised what the happy youth was doing. This was the first – and only – time that he had been given a budget, albeit small, and told that he could buy himself a new laptop from it. The memory brought a reluctant smile to his face as he remembered the time spent poring over reviews before making his choice, the thrill of slitting open the plastic wrapping encasing the box and that fresh smell of “newness” from the machine therein. His smile flickered briefly as he remembered various teething problems that he had had, but the machine had served him well. He even remembered that one or two of the teachers had noticed that he had a new machine. “Why has one of the help got a new laptop?” had complained one. “Yes, mine is at least six months old,” had agreed another. “I should have a new laptop and he can glue mine back together and use that.” “Derp?” had said the P.E. teacher. With a start, The Technician was awoken from his reverie by the sudden reappearance of the blue-clad phantom. The creature extended an index finger and made a curious circling motion, as if correcting the time on an invisible clock. Indeed, it seemed as if time itself had sped up and now The Technician’s shoulders slumped as he saw his other self find that the machine’s speakers had ceased to function apart from random scratchy growls every few months. The finger circled again and each time it stopped The Technician saw another time that a fault had developed. Faster, ever faster, the finger circled until suddenly it all was still. The Technician found that he and his ghostly companion were alone in the now darkened office, Stygian save for a single shaft of light that seemed to emanate from an impossible height. In the shaft floated the laptop. Outwardly, it still looked fair, but The Technician knew the horrors that lurked inside its case for the machine had not just “served him well” – it was still serving him, though far from well. “Open the lid,” commanded his companion. “Please,” begged The Technician. “Do not make me. Let me keep my happy memories.” “OPEN THE LID!” With trembling fingers, The Technician eased open the lid of the laptop. He had barely managed an inch when, as if possessed by a demon, the machine sprang fully open to reveal a battery crippled by the last Windows 10 update festering at its base and a browser with but four tabs open consuming almost 100% of the CPU and RAM, with the foremost tab displaying its horrible visage to the world… Acer Iconia W510 32 bit Atom dual core Z2760/1.8Ghz processor 2GB of RAM W10EDUx32 Trailing behind it like a tattered cloak were the accessories he’d paid for himself to try to extend its life: an SD card to bolster the machine’s limited disk space… a wireless mouse to replace the poor touchpad and screen… a network adapter… a collapsible stand to help him see the tiny screen better now that his eyes were failing with age… along with other strange, undefinable shapes. Worst of all was the horrid, scratchy, growl that taunted him that the speakers were not dead, just not willing to work for him. “Crekeli-li! Crekeli-li!” “Nooooo,” sobbed The Technician. It seemed then that even the apparition took pity on The Technician, for once more the scene shook… 7

sonofsanta Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 That better damn well count for the 2pm deadline as well. An hour of work to get it in ON THE DOT 1
LeMarchand Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 An hour of work to get it in ON THE DOT I'm not sure your SMT would agree with your definition of "work" . 3
sonofsanta Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 I'm not sure your SMT would agree with your definition of "work" . Shhhhhh it's a Friday, it could save the school £600 on a new workstation, it's all justifiable. And that, your honour, is why I've brought this unfair dismissal case... 2
ataylor Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 I'm not sure your SMT would agree with your definition of "work" . That work might pay off and save the school some ££££! Edit: Beat me to it! ^^^^^ 1
