Hi mate,

Did you not sign up for a multi year deal last year? Your reseller should have been recommending it for a few years as ms have been gradually reducing the discount and the only way to get a bit of a grace period was to secure the pricing for a few years.

No. We were offered but as it was the first year we went with OVS and a) it wasn't budgeted for and b) the school had several expensive projects on at the time they didn't want to commit.

I would have expected a small increase but 20%! I nearly fell off my chair!

I’ve just renewed with Lane Business systems, Andy gave me a lower price than last year despite being in y2 of a 3yr contract

I’m not sure whats going to happen when we reach the end of the contract, a 20% increase will hit us hard :(

I can recommend moving to Windows 10 Pro, it's free-ish, and Google Docs/LibreOffice/MS Office Online

How is Windows 10 Pro 'free-ish'?

It's a free upgrade from Win 7/8 Pro, and there's no ongoing costs, however there's ads you have to spend a bit of time blocking/ignoring

It was a free upgrade. It isn't now. Plus - who upgrades their entire site by converting one license key at a time, which would be the only method that sticks to the licensing terms?

The ability to upgrade free ended on 29th June 2016 - and you'd've had to get individual keys for every machine, and therefore would not have been able to image the machines as you don't have a VL license.

Free upgrade still works, did it last week. And in answer to who upgrades every machine? Me. Clone blank win 7 ssd, swap into computer, slic the correct OEM key, run upgrade, put back in original ssd. Repeat. All new computers are fine of course.

One day we'll learn of someone who didn't buy CALs and was sent to jail.

Advocating the breaking of license agreements and copyright is not acceptable. It is unprofessional to say the least. We are required to ensure we follow the law and ensure our software is licensed properly and legally. Using workarounds when Microsoft have specifically stated a licensing program has ended is NOT fulfilling those requirements.

Also, the method you are using for cloning machines violates the Windows license if you do not have a volume license. Which means, legally, you are breaking copyright law in the UK.

Whether or not you get "sent to jail" is entirely irrelevant.

It comes with an OEM licence, I install windows using that licence, then I run the win10 setup.exe and it lets me upgrade, it contacts the MS servers and they say: sure, this computer is authorised to upgrade to win10, we'll store the GUID of it on our servers.

If that wasn't legal it wouldn't work

I think you will find that it was only kept open up for those of us past the deadline that require the use of assistive technologies, not establishments.

If you use assistive technology on Windows, you are eligible for the free upgrade offer. That said, it is not intended to be a workaround for people who don't use assistive technology and who missed the deadline for the free offer.

Even then, that offer should have expired, but as you see from the quote, this is not a free for all.

Not exactly true. Not having turned off a server is not the same as doing it legally. What you have here is a grey area. And we as professionals don't work in grey areas with licensing - it opens us up to risk and that is not a good thing.

Technically, my bike can go over 70mph. Doesn't mean its legal to do so on the road.

Doesn't say that anywhere on the microsoft page though, if they wanted to stop it they would, or put up a big red warning.

It's in their interests to get everyone on Windows 10, less support costs, more ads to sell. It's literally contacting their servers to every single upgrade, they can do whatever they want, only reason the free download advertising stopped was to please OEMs who would rather you bought a new computer

Slightly OT but we are 2 years through a 3 year OVS agreement and need to renew by the end of the year. Now another company have approached and offered us a better price for the final year which is 4% less then our current reseller. Being a primary it works out at saving £55 but is it worth the trouble for moving resellers? We are happy with who we currently have and they have been helpful in the past.

Let's put it this way - Microsoft have officially stated that the free upgrades have ended. This ties in with their terms and conditions. Using it now, outside of any narrow exceptions allowed, is a violation of those terms and therefore, regardless of whether their server responds or not. I could say that we have 80 FTE staff for our EES and our RDS servers will be licensed for a million users if we want it to (as their servers will happily issue the license), but it would be breaching the license as we actually have more than double that FTE. Just because something works does not make it legal or within the terms and conditions of the license.

Normally if your in a 3 year agreement, your year 2 and 3 prices should be the same as year 1 regardless of any price change up and down as that was what you bought into (from everything we were provided when we went down the OVS-EES route when it started) as that was the point of the price fixing.

Only change for Years 2 and 3 would be you having to pay for any additional FTE if you were over the amount you originally stated for Year 1. If your FTE went down in those years, well you were stuck at paying for the amount you originally said.

MS might have changed this over the last few years.
