timbo343 Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Seeing as though this thing is doing the rounds, which one can you hear? Laurel / Yanni or both? I hear both... which sounds like "yaourel" 1
TechMonkey Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 I heard something completely different than either of those. Not sure what that says about me...
LeMarchand Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 I listened to it earlier in the week and hear "Yanni", but haven't tried it on anything with decent speakers.
Tesla Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Brainstorm green needle is breaking my brain today Or is it Green storm and brain needle............
DJ-1701 Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Apparently it can depend on the pitch... all I know is, he's called The Stig. 1
timbo343 Posted May 18, 2018 Author Posted May 18, 2018 Or is it Green storm and brain needle............ Green needle for me, but others in the office hear Brainstorm
CAM Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 The voice clip is a very clever technical trick. It plays Yanny and Laurel at the same time at different pitches. Laurel is low pitch, Yanny is high pitch but overpowers Laurel to (mostly) mask it. But if you can't hear the higher pitch voice due to hearing degradation, you only hear the low pitch Laurel. 2
HC_Netman Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 I hear both and it seems to be completely random as to which one. If I hear Laurel I can't understand how I ever heard Yanny and vice-versa. 1
elsiegee40 Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 (edited) The voice clip is a very clever technical trick. It plays Yanny and Laurel at the same time at different pitches. Mr gee40 could hear both on his iPad but only Yanny on his iPhone. Son could hear both on his PC speakers and only Yanny on his phone. The quality of the speakers obviously plays a part. My hearing doesn’t work properly anyway - Yanny for me Edited May 18, 2018 by elsiegee40 1
Dave_G Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 How about sounding different depending on whether you have your eyes open or not...
caffrey Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Brainstorm on the other clip. Yes but tell yourself it says green needle (or read green needle) and it magically changes
LeMarchand Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Yes but tell yourself it says green needle (or read green needle) and it magically changes Nope - tried that. The Ba/Va one works for me, though.
unixman_again Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 How about hearing sounds in silent videos? I experience it sometimes. https://health.howstuffworks.com/mental-health/neurological-conditions/hear-sounds-when-watching-silent-videos-it-might-be-synesthesia.htm
6Foot2 Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Audio illusion: The Shepard Tone: The shepard tone is an audio illusion which seems to get forever higher but never really does. 1
DeGrimmy Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Audio illusion: The Shepard Tone: I loved looking into these when I was younger. I preferred the Shepard-Risset Glissando, which is the same illusion, but it slides through notes instead of steps through them. Wikipedia has a nice example!
