PS4 or Xbox One?

I have decided to treat myself to a new console but can't make my mind up on PS4 or Xbox one S. I have a very aging xbox 360 which I don't play too much as it's far too noisy and I don't get too much time these day. I can't justify paying for the Xbox One X as it's too expensive and I don't have a 4K TV either and hopefully won't have to replace it too soon as it's not that old.

 

I've asked a few friends what they play and they have equally PS4 or Xbox between them. I've read reviews online and there doesn't seem too much between the consoles these days. I personally prefer the controller of the Playstation but I think that's because I've used them more. It will probably be only me playing but do either consoles have any family type games which my wife may like. She liked mario kart and some platformy type games but as she isn't a gamer this is a small consideration but may be nice to have.

 

So can anyone recommend a console or some games. I'll be getting Pro Evo for whichever console I get but don't really want to get a console for 1 game so will be looking at others available.

tbh it depends what exclusive franchises you want as the hardware is pretty much on par (i still think at this point id go for a pro/x even without a 4k tv which is how i use my x)

 

ms recently have had naff all exclusives and certainly no system sellers (im sorry cuphead is unlikely to get anyone to buy an xbox) wheras ps4 just this year has had persona 5 (granted also on ps3), horizon zero dawn(and its new dlc which is available as a single game now(or very soon) uncharted 4 (i think that might of been last year) uncharted lost legacy. the xbox has had another gears of war and yet another forza.

 

controller wise its personal preference personally id rather use a duke/dreamcast controller than a ps4 controller i hate it(its too small the analogue sticks feel wrong and are placed wrong) but then im so used to my xbox elite controller or swith pro controller (damn backwards a/b x/y)

 

unless you really want some ms game atm id lean towards the ps4 though and thats from someone who much prefers the xbox

switch is also a good option (but the fifa version of switch is ment to be utter garbage (but then its ea so thats par for the microtransactions))

 

again its down to the games id recommend zelda botw to everyone its just so much fun (not sure about replay value but 1st time its just sheer joy running round the world) splatoon 2 is fun but short in single player, mario kart is mario kart, im really enjoying xenoblade chronicles 2, golf story was fun (though never finished it)

Don't dismiss the X because you don't have a 4K TV. It still adds the following advantages to 1080P users.

 

• Faster load times. The One X HDD is 50% faster than the One S. And the extra 4GB of RAM with the much higher bandwidth, can speed up the loading of assets etc)
  
• Hardware inside the One X provides Anisotropic Filtering (AF) to existing games (makes textures a little clearer). Albert Penello mentions this in an interview with The Know
  
• Existing XB1 games which have dynamic resolution and / or dynamic frame rate will look best and perform best on a One X
  
• Super sampling is enabled by default on games which target 4k. This means that a 4k game playing on a 1080p TV, will have a better image quality than a native 1080p game on the same TV.
  
• Further visual benefits would include higher quality textures which can be seen further into the distance, longer draw distances for the geometry, and extra effects. This is dependent on what the developer does with their game

I expect by next years E3 that Microsoft will be talking about One X exclusives.

 

Having said that I have a PS4 as well and can confirm that Horizon Zero Dawn and the Uncharted series are great games, but I still prefer my Xbox.

This. I'm planning on a PS4 at some stage as there are far more exclusives that I like the sound of. The only XB one was Quantum Break and now you can get it on PC. Your tastes may well run to more of the MS exclusives.

Just play some older games from the Steam Sale on your PC?

 

It will probably be only me playing but do either consoles have any family type games which my wife may like.

 

Not necessarily "family" but Never Alone is out for pretty much everything and Hidden Agenda looks fun for PS4, though probably needs more players.

As for Xbox X, it's just too expensive at the minute. I was thinking around the £200 mark for the console to get me going. And I do play some games on the computer but the reality is that it's not connected to the TV and getting playing time on it is a problem. To be honest, being able to get any sort of space is a minimum in my house so maybe a switch is the way to go!!

I have an Xbox One S and am giving serious consideration to moving straight to the X when prices drop next year at some point.

If you already have a Live Gold subscription and invested in 360 titles than you should go with the Xbox to keep your investments live (and it's a great system IMO).

However, I have bought the kids a Switch for Xmas. On Friday I unpacked it and set it up to make sure all was working fine.

I also installed Poyu Poyu Tetris which a game my son wanted.

Then I decided to have a game. It was Sunday afternoon before I realised just how addictive it was!

Compared to the Wii U, the Switch is like a breath of fresh air and already there are almost as many games for it as there was for the Wii U when they killed it.

Tough call, I have both, and have found that I am playing the Xbox more generally now, because my friends on there are on more regularly, although i personally actually prefer the PS4 ( I have rocket league on both, and PS4 version deffo has the edge (when randomly generating a car design for you, it's much quicker, and doesnt "bog down" whereas the Xbox version definitely has a touch of slowless about it)

 

I tend to get much better deals on the ps store than you do on xbox in my experiance, although the free games every month i'd say Xbox wins (although PS4 has been much better recently, since the price increase for PS Plus)

 

I guess than it may boil down to exclusives, and IMO PS4 wins on that front, with Uncharted and Horizon Zero Dawn series.

To be honest - I've always seen it down to a couple of factors.

 

Your gaming friends - what do they have? With the largely social aspect of gaming now, you'll probably want people to play alongside. That said, with them split equally - who's online (with similar games) more?

Franchises - what franchises do you like? If any are exclusives then that certainly sways it in one direction.

 

Also - If you already have a subscription active (XBL or PSN) that could also help you decide.

 

Whichever you decide - I'm sure there's a whole host of gamers on here who'll game alongside you (there's even an Edugeek community on PSN)

I say go PS4. I have the original Xbox, and 8 Xbox 360s that i use for System Link multiplayer gaming with my mates, so i do like the Xbox but i went PS4 this generation and do not have an Xbox One (yet). To me it feels like Playstation get that its a games console first and entertainment system second, at least at launch Microsoft seemed to see it the other way around.

 

If you like COD you get the season pass content 30 days sooner than Xbox, you can add Playstation VR which i have had for a year now and is amazing. Then you have some of the social games like Hidden Agenda available that you can play with friends via their mobile phones as controllers. I also prefer some of the exclusives on the PS4 such as The Last of Us Part 2, Grand Tourismo Sport, Uncharted 4. Just feels like PS4 is a more serious gaming console.

You can't go wrong with either console to be honest. Like others have said it's best to take a look at the exclusives and see which ones you prefer.

 

And although this wasn't an option, I can't recommend the Switch enough. It's had some incredible games released for it this year, plus you have the added benefit of it being portable if you needed it to be.

As many others have said,if theres a exclusive game for one console that you like then go for that.

 

Also consider what games your friends play, if all the ps4 people play games you dont enjoy then go xbox.

 

Personally ive switched between the two but have always come back to the xbox. Prefer the controller and now ps4 online costs unlike ps3 so another identical thing.

I have both a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and both have advantages but I have always massively prefered the xbox controller. I sadly dont find Horizon that great a game, it was okay but I felt it was over hyped tbh, I do like Uncharted though.

Halo has always had a special place for me and I love it, xbox also has Play Anywhere which allows you to buy games on xbox and also play them on Windows 10 along with synced progress. Not all games support it but if they do I generally get them for coverage on both as my X is more powerful than my pc right now.

If you are into multi plats the xbox one x will give you the best performance and graphics over the pro right now and a lot of 360 games are now compatible on it (including Red Dead Redemption) which works well. I actually do play a fair few 360 games on it for nostalgia tbh. Forza Horizon 3 is still one of my fav car games as its not too serious like Forza Motorsport or GT and its also play anywhere so you can play it on xbox and then go continue on pc if you want.

 

This is all not to say the ps4 is bad, I just prefer the multi plat on xbox for the better controller and especially if its play anywhere. A lot of the exclusives have not really been my type of game so other than uncharted/horizon nothing has really blown me away that much. The kids do love minecraft which is pretty awesome, you can also link the ipad to play with xbox and pc but sadly Sony has so far refused to allow cross play because well, its sony tbh. The xbox does also get you a 4k bluray player as well, a big mistake not including that in the ps4 pro imo.

and that tbh could be a reason not to buy a one if you have a decent pc just play the exclusives on that as most are play anywhere. i just wish horizons 3 was more stable on pc (not tried it recently but when it came out i dont think i managed more than 10 mins before a crash)

Its running great for me tbb, it got patched after a few weeks and it seemed to fix all the issues I had seen with frame drop. Tbh quite a few of the ps4 console exclusives have started to appear on steam as well but not first party stuff. I like being able to play on either especially for 1 purchase as the tv isnt always free for me to use (damn you soaps )

 

I am hoping MS finally add RDP (or RDP like) services from pc to xbox, you can remote play the xbox on pc but it would be nice for it to work the other way especially since they are adding keyboard/mouse support. You can use miracast to screenshare a laptop to the xbox though right now.

Tried the Steam Box? Granted it's Steam games only, but that's still a lot of games. Seriously impressed with mine over wired LAN, and works nicely with my PS4 controller (you should be able to use either).

I can't justify paying £500 for a console - once you've paid for games etc. It seems I'll be paying nearly £300 for a console and some games for a PS4/xbox 1.

For purely practical reasons, the Xbox One X is going to be the tech leader and the one with the most grunt for at least the next few years (and in a much nicer/smaller case!).

If, however, you want to try something new then the Switch should be given serious consideration.

@Dos_Box - you're not helping!!...with so many people recommending it, I keep thinking a Switch should be my choice as it means it's portable and can be played with the family. But I'm still not convinced as I keep thinking it means giving up on the more serious games...

 

I may just stop thinking about it and wait until after christmas and see where the mood takes me. I still think anything over £200 for a gaming console is a bit much but it seems that's just the cost these days.

The xbox one s is a great value option. You can get them for sub £200 with a controller (controller can be used on your gaming PC via Bluetooth) and minecraft (which could also be used in Windows). They have 4k HDR support for Blu-ray and streaming services like Netflix and amazon (also atmos sound). This may not be needed now but it's nice to have the option, simply as a media player it could justify it's price.
