Can anyone help? We are in dispute over the service so MLS have suspended our account.

The librarian has bought an esky scanner and we cannot get the barcodes to appear anywhere although it does look and sound as if they are being read.

Does anyone know how to set it all up? I've followed the instructions and as I say, it seems to work, but where are the barcodes?

If you open notepad and scan a barcode, does it appear as the expected number? If not, you may be able to put the scanner into programming mode and scan a special barcode to get it to read the code properly. (The cheapo scanner I bought for home needed reprogramming like this).

Hopefully this means that you can cancel any contracts you may still have with MLS?

To work with MLS your scanner needs to prefix the ~ symbol and have a suffix of a return value.

@bennz I have no idea what that means. I just scan the barcodes in books.

I have done all the setting up and such that is suggested. No luck sadly - in notepad, wordpad or excel

so when you scan two barcode into notepad it should look like:

~12345

~12346

your manual should have a section on how to configure a prefix and suffix when scanning. The barcode reader when scanning a barcode needs to add a ~ symbol at the beginning and a carriage return at the end to make it a new line, hope that makes a little more sense.

Did the setup include configuration of scanner? Having thought about it, I seem to remember that it was as simple as scanning the correct barcode on the sheet provided with the scanner. Mind you, I also seem to remember that it still output something even without configuration.

No manual - very brief instructions on how to set up = basically you scan two barcodes.

I dont know if it is something I have done or am not doing, or whether I have a faulty scanner. The only documentation states that a scanned barcode will appear in WordPad, a txt file or excel. Which it doesnt.

What is the name of the device that appears in device manager when you plug it is? Does it have a driver? They tend to emulate usb keyboards

Its an esky ES016

Yes, the PC sees it as a keyboard

*I had it as a wireless device with a dongle. I went back to wired and now - cross fingers- it seems to work!

Thanks all

That doesn't bode well. I got a wireless one for when I start cataloguing stuff in the garage. Better check it works!

I asked my school running JL (whatever the last non-cloud version was) to cancel their sub as if it was for software updates there aren't any outside of "upgrading" to the cloud and if it was support we never use it as the few times we did we were told that there was little that could be done as we needed to upgrade to the cloud version.

Regular backups are made and I figure that we could always run a standalone locked down machine/VM with whatever Win Version it will work on if it stops working in the future/before we replace.

MLS are claiming that we will have to return the scanner (not sure it's their property, but if so £20 isn't going to break the bank) and that all our data will be wiped/lost. Not sure how they think they're going to do that unless they think we're on the cloud version.

They might want to read their own licence before requoting that at you before they end up in trouble.

The amount they charge per year and they're after a used £20 scanner back is actually bordering on hilarious/insanity. Bet they also charged an extra fee for the scanner at the beginning too.

I think our MLS portal has been moved to their new system. Does anyone know how to access management in the new system? Can't see a link to it.

Actually, now you mention that I'm certain that's the case. In which case MLS need to properly train their staff to ensure they don't tell porkies. That scanner belongs to your school.

To link borrowers with local AD accounts so we can get email addresses in do we have to use Azure?

I haven't signed up to Azure and don't really want to just to link email addresses?

Cheers.

Hi folks,

We've been suffering from MLS's tip top support for several months now and are looking at different systems. kennysarmy had mentioned looking at a trial of the Oliver system - can I ask how it went? We've also been recommended Accessit which I have found discussed favourably in another thread so those were the two we had our eye on. If anyone has experience of these we'd be really grateful to hear from you.

Maybe I should create a new thread entitled 'sick of MLS and want to move on' - I expect it would get a similar number of views as this one...

Thanks,

Richard

Make sure you don't spent days/weeks moving to another system that can screw you over in future years, pick something open where you can get support from multiple places
