Edu-IT Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I heard this story on the radio this morning and now I've had chance to read more I really don't think the BBC should be blamed. Below are quotes from the article but you can read it in full here. The girl whose 18th birthday party was gatecrashed by hundreds after a Radio 1 DJ announced it live on air has admitted that she had fears it might get out of control after inviting 'everyone'. Her mother, Rebecca Brooks, is threatening to sue the BBC after DJ Pete Tong did a "shout-out" live on air. Mrs Brooks, 54, is reserving her anger for the BBC. She said: "I think it's totally negligent of the BBC to allow a statement like that to be broadcast. Now... But today Sarah released a statement admitting she may have been "foolish and naive" after putting up "a poster at school inviting 'everyone'". She said: " Little did I know almost everyone from Torquay Grammar sixth form would attend and what is more invite 'everyone' from different schools and the surrounding area. Pete Tong, the DJ, only read out the shout out sent in by a listener. This is normal, Pete Tong always reads messages on his show. He did not give the exact location of the party although I don't know how many mansions there are in Bovey Tracey so what he said could quite well have directed people to the venue but then that is not his fault either. He's not to know the ins and outs of the town. Do you think that he should be to blame? Personally I think the daughter is more to blame for advertising the party in the way that she did and the mother should focus her attention on the daughter rather than getting on at the BBC.

She put the poster up she is to blame not the BBC The party was already advertised and therefore it was too late to cancel, or at least so she thought. I would have just turned people away. Wouldn't do my reputation any good but at least the house wouldn't be damaged. I think the BBC are being used as a scapegoat. Silly woman!

I didn't hear anything on the night in question - apparently after being kicked out, a load of people went through the village and did some damage up there... Don't venture into the centre often, there's a LOT of kids around, Bovey Tracey alone has about 4 coaches which go to it to pick the kids up and half of them are violent chavs... being fair they're not that bad though... I haven't a clue where that house is though...

cookie_monster Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Yes it was another case of a stupid kid advertising something on a social network to their 400+ "FRIENDS" that they don't really know and then they look all surprised when they all come to the party. Think first MUPPETS!!! Radio 1 can't really be held to account for this especially as having heard the broadcast Tong didn't give out exact details.

Personally, I hope she does try & sue the BBC so that it can be proven in the courts that the family are idiots. For a start, it's said that she advertised it on Facebook - if that is true then it's been shown in court before that social-networking advertised parties get stupidly out of hand. On that basis alone, without even hearing the daughters confession, I would find in favour of the BBC. But then, I am not a judge...

I used to have parties at my parents house but I was SO careful to only invite people I knew well, and who wouldnt bring any dickheads with them Seems like some people like that girl are too desperate to be popular so try to invite as many people as they can, despite the fact that those people couldnt give a crap about her, they're just coming for the party Not the BBC's fault at all

torledo Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Shouldn't Pete Tong just grow up instead of doing 'shout outs' on radio 1, the guy must be in his late 40's and here he is working for a station who's listeners proably have an average age of 13 (with IQ to match), trying to get down with the youth and worst of all he doesn't seem to have grown out of this adolescent nonsense himself.

Actually, in his defence he's doing his job. You might not be into 'adolescent nonesense', but you'll find that a lot of 'adolescents' actually tune into his show and ask for said shout outs, because they WANT to. In this respect he's hitting his target audience, of which you're not a member of. I don't know what your tastes in music/entertainment are, but chances are if you like classical you're not going to listen to Pete Tong and theres just as much likelihood that theres others out there that don't like classical and think that such 'drivel' should be taken off the air. You can't please everyone, he's hitting a specific target audience. What you think of said target audience though is another matter, the man is just filling his job role
