Trojan Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 We are looking to replace our CCTV system, possibly with IP cameras. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, specifically around the storage device for the footage and the software to control and view all the cameras. Thanks in advance.

Wow that's a lot! Hikvision here as well. Some schools run Mirasys as the recorder, but the Hikvision DVr are normally good enough for most installs 2

Blue_Cookeh Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I'm very fond of the Ubiquiti UniFi cameras in our school. We manage and install them in house and have a storage server that they all record back to. Image quality is top notch, night time images look good, can go up to 1080p30 and relatively cheap. Obviously depends how hands on you want to get internally, though. 1

We have partnered with them for a number of years and have a lot of EDU sites using the solution. Pure IP, with cameras starting around the £300 mark. Great portfolio and technology. In a number of sites we have replaced 4/5 cameras with just 1, that records all aspects. Well worth the time to review. box_l Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 Unifi video, easy to manage and control. External access is great too when you setup the cloud login. No ports to open into the network, the controller creates the tunnel to the cloud service. 1
2097 Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 around 90 hikvision here with 3 NVRs ( raided ) I have 4 hikvision at home ( bullet and mini dome ), mine are just connected to a NAS though They are by far the best bang for the buck !

It's not a manufacturer i've come across before, but good to hear they are getting favourable write-ups on here. We've got Mobotix and Axis here. The Axis appear to be better quality for us, but that maybe because the Mobotix kit doesn't appear to be setup right - thats a job for the summer to try and undo the original mess.
dgsmith Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 If you have an existing analogue/coax system, look at the hikvision range of HD-TVI cameras. Whilst we have an IP based system internally, our external cctv system uses coax and you can get up to megapixel cams now while utilising existing cabling. New installs entirely from scratch is still best going IP, but analogue can now compete in terms of image quality, and for less than you might think.

FragglePete Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 Using Ubiquiti Cameras here - introduced 10 recently on to the network; excellent value for money per camera (~£125), superb quality and the DVR you can either buy a standalone unit or download the software for free and run it on your own box. SMT here are staggered by the quality and it has dealt with a number of incidents already. Looking to expand it more over the Summer. We're running it on an old PC with a WD Purple 4Tb drive and it works really well. Pete

Jobos Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 I'm glad I've found this thread as we are looking to install a new system over the summer too and have been recommended the Hikvision kit namely 16 X DS-2CD2135FWD-I(S) Hikvision Europe and the DS-7616NI-K2/16P DVR Hikvision Europe I've fitted the old analogue systems before but never an IP system so getting a little lost. From the Hikvision website it looks like the cameras have a RJ45 socket. Do I connect that to a network faceplate using a short patch lead or is there a better way to stop tampering? The website lists all sorts of wall adaptors. Can the cameras be mounted on walls as they are or do I need an adaptor? The DVR above has 16 ports. Can I take a cable directly from each camera to the DVR? Can these cameras be used externally? Thanks in advance for any advice.

As with any CCTV analogue or IP you should ensure connections are secure and tamperproof this would go for BNC on analogue systems. Ways round this could be mounting the camera to a box with security screws for example and having the connection inside that. Not sure what accessoreis Hikvision do but some firms make connection boxes but it very much depends on what your connecting to / fixing it to etc...

I think going with a box would probably be the best way forward but not sure what type of connection would be best i.e. have faceplate inside box or crimp RJ45 plug directly on cable.

Boredguy Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 Yep we have the cat5 running directly from the switch and I terminate straight to a RJ45. I've also put the gland on it so it has a waterproof cover over the connector as well as it being inside a waterproof housing @Jobos 1
