extra info there is a small hole in the end of the case, but that is probably just there for the same reason there are now holes in pen caps

It's a PH tester for electrolosis. You can run electric through to create gasses for scientific experiments be careful though they can be dangerous and I have no idea what I'm talking about :D

Looks like a modern day throgwoppit. Surprised they make them still.

 

Throg is an old Devonian word for flea as in, "Oi've bin scratchin orl day - reckon oi've got throgs." The throgwoppit was originally made out a a small scrap of wood (the blue square in the modern version pictured) tied to a small flat stone with a hole through it or in later days two or three washers. If you spotted a flea you could pull out the device and "wop" the flea. Hence, "'Ere borrow moi throgwoppit and seeyum off."
