strawberry Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 I've always had a slightly unfortunate surname inherited from my mothers first marriage, With her having now passed and my sister having married i'd like to change my name to one I have a bloodline with. Has anyone experienced changing name by deed poll? . Was it straightforward?

It was straight forward enough, just apply online and make sure you get a few different copies to send around the relevant companies you need to. They do return them but if you want to let as many people know as quickly as possible, I would get a few copies done. Other than that, It is just letting people know really. Start using your new surname straight away and keep informing the people who need to know.
jmcdermott Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 I changed mine about 15 years ago, it was as simple as everyone says, fill out the forms then send copies to everyone that needs to know, from then on you just use the new name.
LincolnE Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Fill out a form, there are templates out there that are free to download. I'd recommend paying for decent paper though, (like the thicker styles). It makes things a bit more professional and helps prevent issues down the line.

Don't pay anyone pretending to be "UK Deed Poll Service" etc as there is no official service, a deed poll is literally a legal document relating to a single person (i.e. you). I used https://freedeedpoll.org.uk/ and just printed onto some fancy paper to satisfy people asking for "an original", and signed it in front of two witnesses (I think they just have to not be related to you). Make sure you do at least two originals so you can send them off to multiple places at the same time, speeds things up. The DVLA were perfectly happy with the deed poll I sent them, and once I had the driving licence issued in the new name that also sped up things like the bank. TSB just have a form you need to fill out for change of name and post it off with the deed poll, easy peasy. HSBC make you go into the branch and fill out a form with one of their staff, but again easy (so long as they don't mistype your name....) All it cost me was a couple of books of stamps, plus £20 for the DVLA as I had to change my photo at the same time (but it's free if you are just changing your name/address).

Also re passport etc Having recently married, and therefore been subject to changing my name on MANY MANY documents, I can attest to the fact that changing your NAME might be easy. Getting all your accounts etc to RECOGNISE it is somewhat less straightforward. For a start, PARTICULARLY with Deed Poll, most places won't let you change names online, they insist on you SENDING them the original. If you only have one original it means you'll have to send it off and wait for it to come back before you can do the next change. Some accounts will let you change details online, which is fine, but it'll take a long time before you stop getting mail addressed to your old name. Just wanted to prepare you for the fact that it can be frustrating and convoluted at times.
