Inserting SFPs

This seems like a stupid question, but I can't find a definitive answer...

 

I've got a pair of HP OfficeConnect v1910-48 switches with 4x SFP slots in them. They are shortly to be connected with fibre - the first fibre the school has ever had .

 

Turning them off is currently a no-no as one of them has the HA cluster on it.

 

I've created the LACP group on the SFP ports - can I install the SFP's while the switches are live or am I courting disaster even thinking about it?

 

I used to do it all the time with Procurves, but these are not Procurves, they are the rebadged 3com units.

AFAI remember, the SFPs are hot-plug on these too. I have tons of them, and when I was first working on them I read the HP documentation that stated they were hot-plug. I certainly have hot-swapped them without issue anyway.

In answer to my own question, it would appear that:

 

a) I haven't got the switches I thought I had - I've got a 1920 and a 1910.

b) The 1920 hot plugs and works straight away.

c) The 1910 does not. If you plug the SFP in, it recognises the module is present but it doesn't transmit data on them until a reboot.

That's mighty odd. As these are under the newest branding I'd guess that the firmware is pretty recent. Some have reported that where the port is shared (SFP or copper) you have to manually select SFP in the config, but I haven't found that myself. The general info on the SFPs themselves suggests it should work:

Also (word of advice) installing any SFP - do not look directly at the module when installing it to protect your eyes - it's there in all the manuals, but thought I'd mention it here!

The SFP module is hot pluggable, it means you don't need to power off the switch when replace the module.

Yep have hotswapped SFPs into V1910's all day long.

As all the guys mentioned, SFP module is hot-pluggable, which means that you don't have to get power off when plug it into switch.

Cisco do this but there may be an unsupported hack in the CLi like there is on some Cisco's, my old SG300 was capable of using non Cisco SFP's with the hack but wouldn't do that in prod environment.

 

Using 1920's at home with both 3com and HP SFP's, no problems and hot plug :-) .
