Good afternoon all,

 

We have always purchased desktops from RM Education, who of course no longer sell their own hardware.

 

I'm at a point now where I am looking to start replacing some of these, and I'm trying to find devices that I can physically secure to the desk (so they can't move, rather than just for security reasons).

 

We currently have RM Ascend 2050 (RM One) devices, and I would love something similar. My key points are:

 

• Being able to physically secure the device to the desk
  
• Minimal footprint
  
• Be able to replace components when warranty expires - ie as close to a standard PC as possible. (No glued together sleek AIO type designs)
  
• Protecting cables from being unplugged by students (not as crucial but ideal)
  
• Front facing ports - at least USB / Headphone. (Not crucial)

My question is:

 

What do you use for desktop devices?

How do you find them?

What options have you looked at?

What do you do for physical security?

 

Any guidance would be great! I looked at a number of devices recently, and at BETT last week, none have given me a full solution that i'm happy with but I have seen a few potential ideas.

You can spec them to your needs and they take up very little space (especially if you get "no number pad" keyboards).

We have a few of the Stone UniStands in one of our rooms where we want to prevent tampering. You can use a standard Stone USFF PC, so any spec that you want. Cover goes on the back to protect the cabling, and you have USB, Microphone and Headphone on the front. Keyboard stands up on the bottom of the stand if you want to use the keyboard space for pen and paper.

I have looked at the Flex Micro - along with similar SFF PCs from other vendors. - All well and good but they still don't give me a solution for physically securing to the desk though?

 

Again, looked at the Stone Unistand - I think it looks hideous though.

Yes, it isn't the most attractive thing in the world, but it does have a desk bolt option to secure to the desk.

We had a demo of one of these but did n't like the fact you could n't blank off the USB ports on the front....

You could probably use the holes for attaching the feet, but I suspect you'd lose stability.

 

If money is very tight, as well as @VeryPC for new machines @ICTDirect_Dave used to do something similar but refurbed (can't spot one on a very quick look at present). Our Library lady at one school is chuffed with hers.

 

Edit: Didn't look hard enough - still some refurb AIOs listed. You can generally choose from a small range of HDD/SSD, RAM and warranty options.

Hi @_kstone would you consider an All in One? Our Glide has a desk lock, and is serviceable and upgrade-able even the screen is easily replaceable. Ports are on the side and underneath though.

and in my experience if you are bulk buying kit a lenovo partner can get a very good price keep at that price for a year.

HP do an equivalent one as well and various options for fixing to monitors, walls, desks etc in the accessories section They are the Mini Range.
