bze2007 Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 How many have taken the plunge and gone fully server 2016 and windows 10 as its coming up to the new financial year and we are looking at upgrading from server 2008 any huge headaches? smooth installs etc
FN-GM Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 (edited) We are a MAT and have 100% Windows 10 clients and have 18 Server 2016 servers. The remainder are 2012 R2. Still working through those. We was "lucky" with the servers as we are merging 2 schools network so was rebuilding them anyway. Everything has gone smooth. We had Windows 10 out before 2016 was released. The number of support calls compared to Windows 7 has reduced quite a bit! Edited February 1, 2017 by FN-GM
jdoldridge Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 We just installed PaperCut on Server 2016 and also moved our main Staff and Student shared areas over to a 2016 server too. Now Windows 10 as yet apart from in our office.
Sagima Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 We're most of the way along - I reckon we're 90% win10 client and 60% 2016 server now. Doing an inplace upgrade for 2012r2 to 2016 was an error in judgment from me (I'd not had issues with 2008r2 -> 2012 or 2012 -> 2012r2) that server had nothing but problems. All of the other 2016 servers I have set up from scratch have been fine. Only problems currently are the redirected folders problem with using server manager to install stuff and I can't get storage replica to work - it claims mismatching sector sizes of 512 for both ends so I'm hoping they'll be a fix for that. My first 2016 server was for KMS and it invalidated the licence of almost every windows 7 client I had - they may have fixed that but i got around it in the interim by reimaging, setting up a 2012r2 kms server for win7 and using active directory activation for win10

I've got a couple of test boxes running Server 2016 and Windows 10 and all seem well though so I'm not anticipating much in the way issue! I am going to keep an eye on here though so please report all issues :)
zag Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 Running a few 2016 servers so far, no real issues other than a lack of documentation when it came to setting up IIS stuff. I wouldn't personally upgrade everything at once, its far easier and less prone to error doing it gradually over a number of years.

I did in-place upgrades on our Hyper-V hosts (from 2012R2) with no issues at all. Now I just need to rebuild my SCCM server... not sure the benefits are particularly worth the hassle.

DCUK6 Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 This is my plan for April holidays. I am starting everything from fresh though, reinstalling all servers and the windows 10. New domain and all. Hoping in 1 week i can do everything so i can go on hol in week 2. Alot of work!

Still way too many issues and changes they are making. Its on my timeline for 2 or 3 years away. Good luck though

Have planned out each day and what i think is possible. Lets see how much i can stick to that. Good news is, im using the server that holds the virtual desktops at the minute so the old servers that hold the current domain will still be live. Either way though, every machine on the VDI will have to reinstalled. Wondering if i disconnect the current 2gb ESXI ssd if i can just plug it back in incase things go wrong. No, it WILL work!!!!!
