Anybody else swimming in computers at home?

Starting to struggle now with space as i seem to be swimming in computers at home, did not really notice until today with having the day off and trying to tidy sort my kind of office / spare room at home.

 

I've got my Mac Mini, 2012 Macbook Air, 2015 Macbook Air, 2013 Macbook Pro, 2 Asus Windows 7 netbooks, 1 Acer Windows 7 netbook, 1 Acer XP Laptop, 1 Acer Windows 7 laptop, 1 Acer Linux laptop, 1 HP Windows 7 laptop, iPad Touch, iPad Mini 1st Gen, iPad Mini 2nd Gen, iPad Air 1st gen

 

Am i the only one who just cannot chuck out usable working computers? I don't want to part with them but i can only really use 1 or 2 screens at once, and i know if Apple release new Macbooks in October with that touch bar i won't be able to resist .

Sell the newer ones, chuck the older ones (like netbooks). I got into that state and now I live by "if I haven't used it in 18 months, and it doesn't hold sentimental value, in the trash it goes!" for most of my stuff!

I used to be exactly like this. Moving into smaller digs I've had to reduce my estate considerably. If Not only to reduce elec bill

 

Im now have a MicroServer, small tower server, Switch, AP, Draytek on 24/7 using about 145w and occasionally boot up Mac Mini for lab work or Mac Mini server for other IT stuff. Most of the time happy to use a laptop or iPad for browsing the web.

A lot of mine went to the tip recently, wasn't worth the hassle in even trying to sell it, not much I can't do between my laptop and i5 tower these days, my main uses of IT at home seem to be mainly web based

I have a computer, laptop, tablet.

 

I rarely use those three as I seem to be able to do everything on my phone!

 

My computer is at least 10 years old (except for replaced parts)

My laptop is about 3 years old

Tablet is about 4 years old.

 

Its just so much easier to use my phone although I am thinking of getting rid of my pc and buying a Chromebook as i only surf the web and occasionally make a word document in Google Drive.

Sell the newer ones, chuck the older ones (like netbooks). I got into that state and now I live by "if I haven't used it in 18 months, and it doesn't hold sentimental value, in the trash it goes!" for most of my stuff!

 

Sometimes it's handy to have something disposable for when a relative needs a laptop or there is a trade-in deal likes the one Microsoft ran for Windows 8 (I traded in a slow rubbishy netbook for £100)

Working, dead or dying, nothing gets chucked away here and I seem to collect lots of donated stuff. It's like a hedgehog hospital but with anything that has a plug or uses batteries instead of hedgehogs.

Some come to get better and some come to just grow old or donate their parts.

Sounds like our store room (also known as the server room) which is full of all sorts of things 'just in case' and has saved us thousands over the years in parts

We have far too many PS/2 keyboards here but apart from some old decrepid servers.

Errr ... sort of, although the only "PC" on 24/7 is now a CentOS Asterisk PBX (atom based, but still costs ~£1 a week min). Other than that I have a CNC machine and 3d printer(s) which have their own PC or laptop, a "media server" (seldom used - but stores "all the stuff") and a couple of old retirees which need to visit the tip. Then there is the legion of embedded stuff (Arduino, PicAxe, Microchip) and the other 24/7 machine - a RPi which is sucking up data from all the Arduino's acting as monitoring stations (temp, humidity, electric use, mains voltage, light, soil moisture, air quality etc). I have got a lot better recently! One day though, I will throw it ALL out and take up painting with watercolours and never look back. Maybe.

Yes, very similar but mine has spread from one room to all of them.

Mines all under my stairs, its rather warm under there. Custom Built NAS which is on all of the time. Running FreeNAS. Also have my Fileserver running too, mainly used as storage for PC/Laptop images. Also runs Hyper-V for my Exchange server.

 

I have a garage full of cases, bits of PC's bits of Servers, Bits of laptops, Spare monitors... cables galore!!

 

Most of it needs to come to work to be disposed of.

Yes, I now can't get out of my office chair at home without hitting an old OptiPlex 745 that I've lovingly dumped on the floor.

 

I did have a clear out recently and got rid of 2 laptops and 2 desktops, but even that was difficult when I thought about the memories of how I got them/what I've done to them over the years.

I had a clear out when I moved out of home to here, still got a fair bit but its mainly cables and bits like that. I maybe able to pull together 2 machines with the parts I have but really I need to sling it all as its been sat there 3 years taking up space.

Mac Classics in the shed (need to bring them back in before the cold spell, again), iMac DVSE is presently my footrest, but pulpit it out once in a while to test boot or to work on some old DV tapes (the firewire 400 is brilliant with the old video camera I have ... an old camera but with a cracking mic and shoulder support for filming), the Mac minis are in boxed away for the moment, but will get out soon for eldest child to do touch typing and use with a USB Piano Keyboard, old MBP is now running OSX Server and doing a variety of tasks (the most important is housing the iTunes library purely of stuff for the kids), iMacs on both desks (with monitors for extended desktops), Brother mono laser printer, HP MFD (with sheet feed on scanner), A3 Colour HP, Canon inkjet for photo quality stuff, old iPhone 4 effectively has become a touch and mainly used as remote control for Apple TVs (Gen 1, 2 and 3), iMacs on both desks, another MBP mainly for cloud based work or for testing things, 2 Windows laptops (Win 7 and Win10). Will get the RPis out again at some point, but that will be cooler to Christmas, once I have more time and space.

 

Most of the other windows kit has now been imaged and turned into VMs to run on my iMac, the kit then broken down to be recycled (hard drives reused in external drive cases or waiting for drilling). The last Linux box (an old Athlon 1000) hadn't really been used since we moved so that is now gone.

 

Some old phones, PDAs, etc.

 

I'm tidying the office at the moment in prep for the new job on Thursday, so tomorrow will be very busy. Some of the new kit from work is being shipped to me at the moment (another MacBookPro) so that will be sat on the desk soon, and some more kit arriving for testing. I was going to put a lock box in the house for when we are away for any length of time, but instead will box up important backup drives and leave with family (also backed up to cloud services and also backed up to hubiC anyway).

 

I don't have as much as I used to have ... ditched a lot before moving. Trying not to keep things I don't need or have use for either.

My old stuff always gets sent off to work, where it's either repurposed, stripped for parts or scrapped. As a consequence we have two desktops, a laptop and a broken laptop/NAS thing. No old tablets or phones either. My office in work is currently busting with stuff though, so I made up for it here!

Just have my Macbook, a small PC under the TV for Kodi and a work laptop which rarely gets used. Long gone are the days where I needed or wanted a lot of equipment at home.

I converted old Laptop screen to working monitors. Soon i'll use them in Arcade cabinets with Retro pie!
