robjduk Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Anyone got an easy, group policy way to disable fonts such as comic sans? It annoys me more than it should that a respectable secondary school employs people who think comic sans is acceptable.

That's way beyond your remit - if they want to use it, it isn't your place to tell them they can't, much as you would like to 2
3s-gtech Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 There are easy ways (deny permissions on the font file, GP file deletion), but it's a bit authoritarian. I've considered it before, but it's better to educate users (such as pointing out and installing some better dyslexia friendly fonts, or linking some articles about them).

Tread carefully.
robjduk Posted July 11, 2016 Author Posted July 11, 2016 lol no way. Network managers have few perks and bending the will of users is one of them. 2
Boredguy Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Users are free to use any font this wish, regardless how much we would like them to use more "professional" styles. If everything was printed/displayed in Arial or Times New Roman it would be very dull.
Jaan Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 That's way beyond your remit - if they want to use it, it isn't your place to tell them they can't, much as you would like to I think [hope] it might have been a joke
robjduk Posted July 11, 2016 Author Posted July 11, 2016 I think [hope] it might have been a joke Im a humorless IT man so wouldnt have got it if it were a joke. Maybe some of your schools are cool with random fonts but I work in quite a respectable place. I gather deleting the file is the main way to do this unless someone else comes up with a better plan?
witch Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Yesh - I thought it was a joke too - so was my response. Plainly not very amusing today
pcstru Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Yesh - I thought it was a joke too - so was my response. Plainly not very amusing today I thought when it comes to typefaces, you were the font of all knowledge? 2
jinnantonnixx Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Comic Sans Criminal - There's help available for people like you! The prosecution rests. 2
mikeprice Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Would I get shouted at if I said I don't see the problem with Comic Sans - in the right place (obviously not in a professional business presentation - but I work in a Primary school Used to used it for lower classes in secondary and phase it out up the years - used the comparison of the powerpoints etc to show year 11's why it shouldn't be used later in life)
DalekSec Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 lol no way. Network managers have few perks and bending the will of users is one of them. With great power comes great responsibility, *Uncle Ben gets shot again*
mavhc Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Don't tell anyone about http://web.princeton.edu/sites/opplab/papers/Diemand-Yauman_Oppenheimer_2010.pdf
sparkeh Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Primary here and we don't use Comic Sans as it doesn't show proper letter formation. We shelled out for some proper fonts that demonstrate proper letter formation to the kids.
Cazale Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Create a new font. Copy Comic Sans. ROT13 the entire alphabet. Delete Comic Sans. Rename new font "Comic Sans". Sit back and open some popcorn. 1

Allie Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Others have pointed out that this is way beyond your job, but excessively controlling users so they bend to your will and tastes seems to be a theme around here among some people, but I'd like to point out the technical and educational problems as well. One, it's part of the MS core fonts. It's reasonable for a software developer to assume it will exist on every Windows machine, deleting it might break some things. Two, it's reasonable to have the entire MS core set for education - including teaching students about good design and why NOT to use it. You wouldn't want to prevent that, would you? 1

I don't see any issue with it even in the professional sense (no I wouldn't use it ever) but I couldn't care less if people do. As for stopping it, you can remove the font from the machine.

Yes - but most machines that IT professionals work on are used by other people - often by a variety of other people so it is up to them what font they use e.g. my OH works in the NHS and produces presentations on her findings for professional audiences - sometimes up to to ministerial level HOWEVER - maybe tomorrow she will be in a meeting and a nurse working in research will be making a Powerpoint which may be used in a school - the IT dept doesn't know - so what right do they have to remove any fonts!!
