Broadband upgrade

Hello All,

 

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. We have been quoted an outrageous about to upgrade our broadband to 200mb through LEA. Has anyone else moved to another ISP? and did you have to get new IP ranges or were you able to keep your existing ranges?

 

I'm sure I'll have more questions when we look more into it.

We are currently looking else where away from the LEA.

 

So far - will be new IP range which is fine, a lot of work but we will face that.

 

Only question so far is what virus protection and filtering solution we get (provided by LEA), we've told them they need pretty much like for like of what we get now.

Surely part fo the problem with upping to 200 might be that your current line is only a 100 bearer, so there might be a massive installation cost, just a thought. We moved away from our LEA years ago

We have been told that we could go upto 1gb at a flick of a switch, however, we have now been quoted a large amount up front to make a change at the exchange and then to increase our yearly rental by the same again and would be capped at 200mb. Does this sound normal?

It is entirely dependant on how your LEA are delivering your connectivity, dedicated leased lines or shared via a single breakout to the internet. Most providers will quote you a dedicated bandwidth speed on a bearer. In this instance 200mb bandwidth on 1gb bearer. These can be increased throughout the life of the contract but doing so will often start a new contract. With regards to your up front costs, i'm going to assume you haven't had a site survey yet? In that case this will be from the telco. Nowadays, if you go for a 3 year contract most telco providers drop the installation to very little, if anything at all. All you are looking at initially, after site survey is excess construction charges, IF any are found.

 

From Exa's side if you were taking our DarkLight or a EAD based leased line then we can literally flick the switch up at any point with the only additional costs being for the new bandwidth requirement.

 

Really not sure what the up front at the exchange cost is, but if you want to send me the quote I am happy to take a look and figure out what they are talking about for you.

What's your average broadband traffic at peak times? We've had 100 meg for several years and average 40meg at peak times, but then we do only use it for internet, as everything runs on-site. no cloud services.

I know we are nowhere near the 100mb we are have currently but we are introducing 1:1 scheme with Chromebooks and already use GAfE heavily so our useage will be on the up and we don't want to hit any pitfalls with the scheme.

Hi Jason,

 

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the prices now available when not using an LEA supplied Internet connection. Wholesale costs have just come down again last month so 200Mbit with nationwide availability will definitely be sub £10,000

 

We've migrated well over 1,000 schools from LEA connections to our own network and you can normally keep your IP address range you currently use or we can allocate you a new one. We've also a lot of secondary schools use our service in Oxfordshire so have plenty for you to speak with if required.
