Unidentified Network with No Internet Access

Hi All,

 

One of my computers has (I think) crashed over the weekend when it was left on. Instead of finding our domain work network, it finds an unidentified network with no internet access (the image displayed in network and sharing center is a public network)

 

Does anybody have any ideas how to fix this?

This used to happen to me in a previous school. Computers would randomly stop recognising the school network. Have you checked the ip address of the computer in question? It's a long time ago but I think the computers would pick up a 'self assigned' 169. ?. ? . ? address instead of one assigned by DHCP from the server.

I think I used to pick an unused ip address from our range and manually assign it to the nic and it would be fine, then after a short while I would change the nic back to DHCP and everything would work as it should again.

No idea why this happened or why the 'fix' worked. Been at my current school 5 years and never seen it happen.

Could be a problem with the NIC. Have you tried disabling it and re-enabling it. Update the drivers. Usually a good place to start.

I have tried resetting, ensuring the drivers are updated. I am not sure why it has happened. Been trying to find some solutions online. Will try to release and renew the ipconfig to see if that helps, failing that I will try assigning a static one and then reverting back to DHCP. Fingers crossed!

Try going into the ipv4 properties of the connection, then to advanced, then to DNS and then specifying the DNS suffix of the domain it should be connected to yourschool.local or similar. Reboot and see what happens

For us, the fix is to change the computer name, specifically the Member of domain bit. For example, our domain is network.local, so if on the affected machine the Member of Domain reads Network, we add .local or if it's Network.local, we take away the .local part. Click OK and reboot the computer.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the apple bonjour service can cause issues like this....if the network doesn't start before it does it gives a random address and gateway? sometimes the default gateway is set to 0.0.0.0 too

There is no apple software on the computer.

 

I have found that, like Casey, it has manually assigned itself a 169. address. I have tried to insert a static one but it has not worked.

 

Having said that, I had left the DNS section blank! could this be why this method has not worked?

Have you tried another device in the same switchport?
