However I'm wanting a complete overhaul and wondered if anyone had had the following and could give a rough pricing: Change from "normal" to LED Lights Change from Hardwood to Carpet Entire skirting board refitted I'll also be stripping/painting but my family can do that. Any rough prices per section or for the full thing would be appreciated.

Duranis Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Honestly a lot of the pricing is going to depend on exactly what you are after/size of room. For example you can get LED bulbs that work in standard fittings for a few quid but if you want some purpose installed LED lighting it could cost hundreds. Same for carpet, bog standard carpet might be £3-4 a square meter up to £20-30 for something fancy, then add underlay cost (which has its own set of options) plus fitting and prices can vary a great deal. Personally I would do the lighting and skirting myself and get the carpet fitted by someone with the right tools and experience (laying carpet properly sucks, especially if you have a strange shaped room or need a join).

Carpet can be massively cheaper if you can find a local end-of-line warehouse - tends to bring the prices down a fair bit, and they often have fitters too. Skirting is not expensive but it's all about mitering the skirting boards properly and getting a good fit. dry Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Agree with @Duranis - there's too many possibilities to say how much it's going to cost, even roughly. I'd personally have a go at doing most of that list myself, but you may not have the time/inclination to do it.

Oaktech Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Ok... I've just done a similar thing - we've converted a bathroom into a bedroom. the room is 2.5m wide and 3.5 long. I put in 8 recessed LED lights. They were from ebay and cost £5 a fitting plus £3.00 per LED lamp. They are 12v DC and the driver PSU was £30, I cabled them and it took about 10m of cable that cost about a pound a metre. I added new power sockets and a new light switch which was about £50 all in. My Brother In Law certified it for me. The carpet was £120 and was an end of roll 4m wide x 3m long. The underlay and gripperrods were about £90. we paid for someone to fit it and the fitting cost £200. We had the walls and ceiling replastered as they had tiles on them/were a bit skanky, a mate did the plastering and charged us £150 for base coat and top coat applied with a couple of days drying time between each. I fitted new skirting boards bought from B&Q for about 90p a metre. A friend's husband is a painter and decorator and he finished the walls for us, primed, undercoated and glossed all the woodwork including the new skirting board. He purchased paint to our colour spec and painted the room in two goes over 2 days. His costs, all in including good quality wipe clean paint was £480. Obviously your costs will depend on exactly how big your room, what you can do yourself and what you can get mate's rates on.
eyetea Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 (edited) We've recently done a couple of rooms... Carpet for our bedroom (approx 4.5 x 3.5 meters off the top of my head) is costing us just shy of £550 inc delivery/fitting. As Oaktech has said if you're lucky / not too fussed you can get offcuts, worth checking with the carpet shop as these can change day to day and you might strike it lucky, with some great savings to be had. EDIT: We "splashed out" on a large box of screws too as the boards underneath were squeaking like mad! If you're floor squeaks it's so so worth screwing them down! Just mind out for cables / pipes!!! One room that has 6 LED GU10 downlights in cost us about £60 to do, with Dad showing me how to wire up properly - not sure on pricing for someone to come in and do it. Another point to look out for with downlights is they might not always go where you want them to - joists have a nasty habit of being in the way! Not sure on price of getting someone to come in and do this, so if you can't do it, try to find a mate who can! Skirting board you can do yourself, we brought unfinished pine which wasn't expensive, 1 tube of gripfill (smelly solvent stuff that works, wouldn't recommend the non solvent!), couple of nails and some filler - borrowed a friends chop saw and fitted it myselfwhich wasn't too bad, just made sure I cut slightly too long and then trimmed down a little at a time! If you're taking the old stuff off you'll probably need to make good the bottom of the wall as sometimes it doesn't like to come off nicely! We went a bit overboard with prep for painting, giving 2 base coats of white so we started with a clean white slate, then put 2 top coats of wipeable paint on top. For all decorating I estimate we paid approx £125 (includes filler, sandpaper, paint and 2 roller sleeves as I hate washing these out so just throw them). If you just want plain white / magnolia paint on the walls you could knock £50-60 off that price. Edited February 23, 2016 by eyetea Screw that floor down!

I have 31 of these https://www.downlights.co.uk/icage-fire-rated-downlights.html First fix for 30 to be wired up cost £200 and this included 6 kitchen sockets, cooker and light switches and was on boxing day whilst we built around him. I wanted a modern look so my skirting and architrave is 12mm MDF that cost £15 for the whole of downstairs and that included being cut to size. My plasterer/builder friend was £100 a day....they were long days too.

Get a carpet fitter from the yellow pages to fit it and bobs your uncle.

Found one in carpetright that we liked but was almost £30/m2 went to CarpetBarn who are our local independent and do lots of end of rolls as well as stuff to order. Found the same stuff to order for 12.99/m2! The fitting is arranged through carpet barn but it's an independent.

SpuffMonkey Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 We just did the lad's room - roughly 3m x 4m - as stated - the carpet is as expensive as you want to pay - but a tip is not to use the shops recommended fitters - they tend to rip you off on the cost of gripper rods etc - I got a bloke in who was recommended on the local streetlife page and he charged £90 for the underlay, grippers, door bars and fitting - nice job too!
