Edu-IT Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 It’s a familiar story, you buy a newly built house only to find that it could take months before BTOpenreach get around to connecting you to even a basic broadband or phone service and then when it does go live the service could be slow. Meanwhile the property developer blames BT and vice versa. I've just been reading this article on ISP Review and it strikes me as odd why BT Openreach wouldn't want to lay their cables while the development work is taking place and there's presumably much easier access. Am I missing something? Why do developers complain that any future requirement to provide connectivity will 'seriously damage future construction'? Sagima Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I imagine bt get fed up with the contractors putting diggers through their cabling and the contractors get annoyed that bt want to dig up their nice new roads and paths to lay stuff
MatthewL Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Just lay the ducts, every new build I have been involved in we ran a BT duct and a Virgin duct into the building, different colours for each as had to have their own and when ready cable was just blown in. Not that difficult and far easier to do when in construction.

The firm was trying to decide to allow a dish on the top for Sky or cabling for virgin. After it was all built they decided on Virgin, by this time everything was being sold/rented off and it took Virgin months to do some cable locating or things at their end. We had been living here for about 12 months before we could get anything decent, luckily enough we went to BT through the phone line and it gave us something. Virgin had dug about 3 holes all around the same 5 metre area and visited the spot about 9 times before it was all done and dusted. I don't understand why they didn't get it all sorted out before hand unless companies simply didn't want to spend the money sorting out the cabling in the event the construction was scrapped?...
Nixon77 Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 As said above, I reckon its because the builders keep cutting the cables if they put them in before works are completed, its happened many a time with schools!!!!

XiJ Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Our new build estate is all cabled up by Virgin. You'd certainly install ducting and the cable would go on during the final fix. Only probably we had was the builders has blocked the ducts with rubble at one point! It doesn't surprise me one bit that open reach would drag their feet here.
DavidLong Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 It not just telecom providers, out newbuild was delayed months as it wasn't convenient for the water board or gas / electric to come and connect the property up. They where telling the builders they had to book them in 9 months in advance for each property
newpersn Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 This is my 2nd new build house. Had to wait 2 months for Broadband. We dont get any EE Signal. (We get G but cant use the internet so we brought a Three Mobile internet dongle and that word for that 2 months. We fully moved in on the Sunday. We had Sky TV install on the Tuesday. The Exchange in Fairford is this Fastershire rubbish and all the cabeints bar the one we are connected to has superfast broadband.... We are stuck with talktalk ADSL services (roll on contact end date) Sky havent got no equipment...
DavidLong Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Our estate doesn't have BT lines, we all have fibre to the property through a private company. They came the day before anyone moved in and connected everything including the wireless. There where a few reliability problems the first few months with it being a new fiber cabinet for the estate but they where always much more willing to look into any queries than BT.
PotNoodleTech Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Virgin ran all the ducts etc ready on my estate whilst they were building - when we moved in an engineer ran the cable into the house and terminated it in a couple of hours, job done. BT also ran cables in this way too, several months later than virgin, and didn't bother terminating or testing them either and left the cable poking out of the duct tied around a brick.... I guess that's BT for you.

Really shocking that the developer didnt get this sorted when building the estate. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to speed up the process of getting the estate upgraded?! Im guessing were stuck for a number of years but any suggestions would be helpful!

Assuming your exchange is enabled for fibre (most are), you will just have to wait until your green cabinets are upgraded. Use the exchange mapper at https://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_mapping and check the Openreach site at https://www.homeandwork.openreach.co.uk/when-can-i-get-fibre.aspx to see if they are planning to enable FTTC in your street/estate.

Yep a good few miles away FTTC plan is apparently April 17 but im not sure how accurate that is and how often that gets put back?!
JordanT91 Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 If it says April 2017 then I'd say that's the earliest it will get done. I know where I used to live in 2014 the date was put back 4 or 5 times (so it was done 2 years after the date they initially gave). Openreach aren't really known for being quick! To be honest, after hearing about new build estates not being connected for months after houses are occupied, I'd be very happy to have ADSL ready for moving in. 1
