Examples of recent 'No' include: No - I can't rip your commercial DVD so all the classes can watch it at the same time, because a) it is illegal to rip it, b) it is illegal to store it, c) are you trying to make your corner of the network grind to a halt? No - member of SMT you can't have a new colour printer because your existing one is a bit slower than you would like because a) there is an MFD just down the stairs b) I've got £200 of toner for the one you've got. No - I can't buy 5 of those laptops they've been pushing on the PC world advert because a) I can get a cheaper, better one refurbished b) the PC world one is not compatible with our build process, there isn't a sccm driver pack available for it c) the warranty on the refurbished one is 3 times longer. No - I can't connect your phone to the wireless to save your data. Actually, I can but a) we use a proxy server, half your stuff won't work anyway b) you earn enough to afford a 2gb contract. etc... etc... The most important thing I think is to qualify every time you say no. Don't just dismiss things without explaining why and at least appear be open to having your mind changed even if the whole time your thinking 'lol nope'. 1

BUT BUT BUT You should be going out of your way to say yes, at least according to some people anyway (luckily enough no one on this thread that I've seen). It is your duty to work out how to say yes!!!!! I don't care if its illegal, I want it done now. I don't care if I shouldn't be watching an 18 movie either, there is nothing wrong with aliens vs predators. The kids are used to gory movies with a ton of blood, at least there is no sex scenes. I want it now. This is an issue we need to work together to resolve, how do I get that movie copied, in my hands and in the pc ready to play for my Students - cmon that's an issue we need to resolve. What can YOU do to provide assistance to this issue. We need to be working together to resolve this legal matter and get the problem sorted so I get this DVD shown to my Students. I think I'm on a roll this week 1

Garacesh Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Both, AFAIK. (I may be wrong) You are being given permission to access the content, via YouTube, by the content owner. YouTube are being given permission to host the content. You are not being given permission to own the content.

For example, downloading a free to air public video (e.g. My Epic Baking Blog) is breaking terms, but downloading a copyrighted video (e.g. Top 10 music) is illegal. Steve

All videos are someone's intellectual property so unless they specifically tell you yes you may download it then you are stealing their intellectual property. Whilst that is more a grey area and would be open to debate, Downloading copyrighted material is obviously clearly illegal.

I spent 30 mins arguing why it was illegal to rip frozen to show to 8 classes before xmas to which their response on numerous occasions was everyone does it. After I told him to leave me too it (because it was lunch time and really got to the point where blood was going to spilt) After lunch I emailed him good news I am pleased to offer the attached solution. The attachment was a quote for 8 copies of the dvd frozen from hmv. 2

The "Illustration for Instruction" bit which was added to the copyright laws about a year ago lets you do a number of things that would otherwise be illegal, if it's genuinely for teaching, and that trumps YouTube's T&Cs. But I'm not volunteering to be a test case in court!
