Server warranties

One of my schools has got a Dell server which is coming to the end of its 3 warranty. Dell want best part of £900 for another 2 years cover (2Yr ProSupport for IT and 4hr Mission Critical) so was wondering what or who other schools use when the manufacture warranty ends?

upgrade options offer Dell warranty service contracts on older dell equipment, i did get some pricing ages ago for a couple of the boxes we had and they were cheaper than Dell themselves.

 

as a side note we use them for spares and upgrade parts and cant fault them.

When the warranty ends we get new servers. Generally though we have 5 year not 3.

£900 for 2 years extended warranty with 4hr cover is pretty good!

 

Until these servers, we were replacing ours around the 3 year mark. However, our current servers were very highly spec'd when we bought them so are handling their jobs well still. So, this year we extended their warranty for another year. Was between £400 and £800 per server for NBD extended warranty for each server (depending on the model) from HP.

TBH we normally get our Dell Servers with 5 Year Warranty; and due to various reasons we've even extended some kit by an additional 2 years (so, 5+2 Years overall - Dell's maximum).

 

Although the specifications and prices that I keep seeing at Server Source - Europe's Leading provider of Refurbished Dell PowerEdge and PowerVault servers are very tempting to put towards newer, higher spec kit still with (3 year min.) 4 hour response warranty!

Where I used to work use a company called PDQ for out of warranty support for servers and storage kit. They are very good.

We get HP servers with 3 years warranty. All are out of warranty now and still have some that are 6 years running without any issues. Only disadvantage now is that if a hard drive fails, it's not covered so have to purchase the replacement drives.

 

If a server was going to fail, I think with it running 24/7 it would fail within 3 years. I always budget for 2 spare servers each year just in case and also have 1 on standby.

Thanks guys. I've had a quote from Comms Care which was half of what Dell want but it doesn't say what is covered so waiting for a detailed breakdown.

We only have 5 year NBD on our servers. They get replaced after 5 years or tasked with something less important

That's some damn nice pricing for that kit Might have to look at them in the new budget for replacing our DR system

As it happens just renewed our warranty for three years on some kit we bought from Server Source. It was slightly more than £900....
