clm Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 Just wondered what peoples server rooms looked like and if you worked in them or not. we are looking at redesigning ours
ITGURU Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 Years gone by when we had 3 servers it was a small cupboard in our office. when we expanded the false wall was changed and now is a large cupboard at the bottom of our office across the whole width.it's the only way in. still small for the kit we have but laid out so you can gain access to each server if needed to pull out for any reason as we are all towers. Not much floor space though. room is about 3m*3m with core switches and 12 servers. 2 air con units. Only go in there minimum once a day to change backups.
sidewinder Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 Mine was a caretakers office/workshop which had a wall put up to create a room big enough to house one server cab. Of course a year later we needed another cab and the wall came down again... Room is probably 2.5mx2.5m with the rest of the space filled with shelves full of spare kit. Got a small desk to do any repairs but it's not a pleasant place to be, the 1 AC unit is struggling and it's usually about 25 degrees. Would certainly never work in there long term, I'd rather be in a nice windowed office not surrounded by equipment
Davit2005 Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 Ours used to be a Wine cellar but now has risen floor (one because is was susceptible to flooding) which has network cables between the server cabs. The room now has 5 air con units and about 11 X 42U server cabs and is kept quite tidy.

MatthewL Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 What do you need 11 cabinets for? At most between out 2 data centres when I was in the NHS we had 3 cabinets at each!
3s-gtech Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 Good sized former office on the second floor here. Tiled flooring, good access to the front and back of two cabinets inside. Plenty of space for a KVM control at a desk, plus the stock of spares. Absolutely no clutter of any sort, after I banished the lot of it.
Callum Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 We have three server rooms. The primary is inside the IT building, and is just a room containing 4-5 cabinets. The secondary is next door to our IT Support office and is the home to two big racks, plus any misc. equipment such as keyboards and mice. We have a third server room for the Sixth Form which is on the top floor and doesn't really have much in it, just one big rack in the middle of the room. All server rooms have two air-con units. Altogether I think we have something like 50 servers, both physical and virtual.
