Popular Post sted Posted November 12, 2015 Popular Post Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) you might want to log into your wsus consoles and stop KB3097877 from deploying (windows 7/8/2012r2 at least) as it can make the pc screen just flash instead of ever getting to a logon screen. If you get this system restore seems to fix it EDIT Also appears to be causing issues with Outlook and Powerpoint the updated patch has been released today and seems to fix the issues Edited November 12, 2015 by elsiegee40 15
Chuckster Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I came in to day to have teacher tell me about this problem on one workstation. I replaced the DVI cable to no avail and now begun a rebuild of the said workstation. Every workstation in school has this update, and only this particular workstation only presented this problem. I hope that'll be the last of it otherwise I am going to be in a whole world of pain.
FN-GM Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 It also makes outlook crash repeatedly and when pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL the screen goes black.
RTay Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) Our problem was that you could not log on to Windows (even in safe mode). Just got a black screen with a cursor. I ran this using a Windows 7 OS install disc (Shift+F10 to open Command Prompt): dism /image:X:\ /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB3097877~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1 /scratchdir:X:\temp (Note: No space after 31bf3856ad364e35 and ~amd64) X is directory of Windows. Mine was on D for example. I will need to install the revised KB3097877 later if they have fixed the problem. May need to adjust the code for x86/32 bit machines. I had an issue with the 'temp' folder so just leaving it as X:\ worked ok. Edited November 12, 2015 by RTay 1
elsiegee40 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Does this thread need to merge with this? http://www.edugeek.net/forums/promethean-direct-support/161838-flashing-monitor.html (or vice versa)
tmoon-mint Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Had this crop up today. Was about to do a fresh install of Office 2013 then I saw this thread. Amazing as ever guys thanks.

LansITGuy Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Also a bit of a warning. It seems to have also broken PowerPoint for us too.
Chuckster Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 MS have sent a revised patch today which the same update KB title. I can say that this has fixed my Outlook issue whereas prior to installing the revised update I was experiencing constant crashing.
fairm010 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 This thread just saved my bacon, thank you!!
ITGURU Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I always wait a few days when updates are released purely for this reason! same applies to SIMS.net updates, Solus Updates, any updates. Even then I deploy to a few test PCs in the classroom next door to make sure we don't get any major issues before sending out globally.
fairm010 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 This was auto installed on my sisters salon PC, meaning no bookings made for the morning!
elsiegee40 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Just to confirm that a patch has been released. I have just run Windows Update on my Windows 7 PC at home and it appeared
john Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 The rereleased patch seems to have cured my borked outlook on my own home PC (and hope that I've caught it at time as I approved the now borked update last night before I left due to the critical nature so released the fixed one now!)
Jordyboy Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 We've been having this problem at our school today! teachers have been unable to get past the logon screen, causing massive disruptions during lessons. Glad there's a fix this for now... saves me from pulling anymore hair out!
sted Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 someone on one of teh other threads posted a fix thats worked here i just added this as a startup script and forced a reboot (you can also usually 2/3 for me use system restore) and rdp into the pc and uninstall. Be aware ive tested it on x64 win7 ONLY but thats the only pcs ive had issues with and they all had the onscreen keyboard displayed on logon screen if exist "c:\novupdatefail.txt" goto end C:\windows\system32\DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:Package_for_KB3097877~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1 /quiet copy "\\server\NETLOGON\novpatchfix.bat" "c:\novupdatefail.txt" /y :end
Network_Boy Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Just to confirm that a patch has been released. I have just run Windows Update on my Windows 7 PC at home and it appeared Does this patch have the same KB number?
jhothersall Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 @ICTDirect_Dave This is what I was getting Dave on the HP all-in-ones
elsiegee40 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Does this patch have the same KB number? Yes, it does. 1
themightymrp Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Same KB number (as it fixes the same security issues) but a newer revision number. My WSUS server has picked up the new version and is prepped to deploy it out We didn't have any issues with logon but maybe 30 PC's had issues with Powerpoint or Outlook :-/
ICTDirect_Dave Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 @ICTDirect_Dave This is what I was getting Dave on the HP all-in-ones I thought of you when I read this earlier. Figured you'd have it squared away by now
mrwoberts Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I'm dreading the move to Windows 10 with its 'no questions asked' approach to windows update. Am I right in thinking that only the Enterprise version of 10 can be told not to automagically update windows??
Network_Boy Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Yes, it does. Thanks for the update. Couple if questions if anyone knows the answers: 1. If you have the original borked version installed, does windows update still find the new fixed version on that machine? 2. Does installing the fixed version on a machine with the borked version installed, fix it? Ta muchly!
