RowlandoGloom Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Hey. Just something I stumbled across. I know Office 2016 isn't supported by SIMS yet, but unlike when 2013 wasn't - it has a few bugs. When you run some reports that export to Word, they freeze SIMS with 'Unknown Error' - then kick you out. We had an ICT teacher excited about 2016 but then found he can't do any reports!
robjduk Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 wait you had a teacher excited about a piece of software built in the past decade....... You sir are the most lucky person on these forums and wish to one day emulate you!

3s-gtech Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I've just started the prep for running 2016 here (KMS), but not brave enough to deploy it. 2013 was dire on release IMO, so I'll wait at least 12 months. Fair play for getting stuck in though.
Sylv3r Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I've had Office 2016 installed on my PC for about a week and didn't notice any errors with SIMS and reports - I'll try it again tomorrow.
robjduk Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 My ICT teacher asked me for Microsoft virtual PC 2006 to be installed over the network about a year ago... I would run over my own parents to have a member of staff who was a little forward thinking...

Fair play for getting stuck in though. I Haven't rolled it out yet but as with Win10, I'm currently offering it to people who want it. So it's not really in mainstream use yet. Let them suffer when things go wrong before anybody else!!
mukz Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 i have win 10 with office 2016 running here, everything works fine for me - if anything its actually faster when i run reports.
Sylv3r Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Noticed my first problem today editing a template in Profiles. After about 30 mins of work, it didn't save back to the SIMS when I had finished an errored out.
zag Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Just testing this out myself, anyone know what the roadmap says about supporting it?
sparkeh Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Just testing this out myself, anyone know what the roadmap says about supporting it? Summer 2016 2
bezzoh Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I know not exactly the forum for it (I was initially just looking for info on office2016 support with sims) but does anyone have a rundown of what GPO settings you've deployed in your educational environments for win 10 and office 16. I've not started testing this yet and any time savers would be really useful.
Max_Power Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 (edited) Summer 2016 Thought would BUMP this thread instead of making a new one. Been to the SIMS Independent conference over the past two days and in one presentation it was mentioned that Office 2016 support has been pushed back to Autumn release which is available in November. Presenter wouldnt speak on or off the record to say if it would work or not nor what any issues maybe encountered if you were to use it prior to that Autumn release. A number of unhappy people in relation to this. EDIT *searched edugeek but couldnt see anywhere this information may have already been given, so apologies if its already in a thread somewhere* Edited March 3, 2016 by Max_Power 2

That would be really disappointing... Its very similar to 2013 so shouldn't be much work for Capita.
Max_Power Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Its confirmed in the latest roadmap they showed us which i'm struggling to find a link to on SIMs My Account. Its poor, its not like Office 2016 was released yesterday. Its been available since September and was in preview a long time before that.
Arthur Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Its confirmed in the latest roadmap they showed us which i'm struggling to find a link to on SIMs My Account. It's still Spring 2016 on the Technical Roadmap. https://myaccount.capita-cs.co.uk/Notifications/sims-roadmap-2014-2015

I've not started testing this yet and any time savers would be really useful. I've attached an export of all our Office 2013 and 2016 GPO settings. Just ignore everything else in it and I've removed all references to my servers / certificates etc. Happy reading. Paul. GP Report.zip
Max_Power Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 It's still Spring 2016 on the Technical Roadmap. https://myaccount.capita-cs.co.uk/Notifications/sims-roadmap-2014-2015 That isnt the latest road map - quite possibly new one hasn't been made available yet, conference only ended yesterday evening.

PhilNeal Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I've asked the team to review because I think they are being ultra cautious. That isn't to say that this will have any effect on support dates. Their view is that they have to have tested every possible route and combination which is very thorough.
timbo343 Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Latest Technical Road Map - https://myaccount.capita-cs.co.uk/Search/DownloadDocument?s=RESOURCEID-1-3293# Well, thats.. err affected our plans to move to Windows 10 / Office 16 in summer, looks like ill still do the upgrade to machines and bite the bullet. I know that SIMS works on Win10 since the last SIMS upgrade, prior to this, it failed at login.
Greg Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 (edited) Phil, it would be good to find out about these changes via Supportnet rather than another site. A Technical Roadmap search there still shows SIMS Technical Roadmap, version 2.0 - September 2015 (17910) Updated - the Supportnet search opens the new Roadmap but the link still says it's the old one Edited March 7, 2016 by Greg
Max_Power Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 @PhilNeal I and other people appreciate that there are a large number of changes in the Spring and Summer release and things need to be checked, but delaying Office 2016 support is one thing that certainly hinders the roll-out which many schools are trying to achieve over the summer (this feeling was shared between many delegates at the conference). Had this information been published in a more public domain I would anticipate there would be even more out cry so to speak.
