RLR Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Under the Casper/Jamf MDM the lock down of passcodes is under restrictions but requires the devices to be supervised: Allow modifying passcode (supervised only) Allow modifying Touch ID fingerprints (supervised only) Let me know if you want a full list of restrictions currently available in Casper and I'll copy and past it.

If you need to do it on a budget Apple Server is only £15 which has Profile Manager if you have a Mac you can leave switched on to run it. If not The Mac Mini entry model is close to £300 without VAT. Although Apple don't recommend using Profile Manager on large scale deployments.

sidewinder Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Annoying about Meraki. On the cusp of deploying staff iPads and thought iOS9 could make it easier. Anyone know roughly how much they charge per device for the paid one? We have around 100 iPads.

Surely there can't be any added features? Was it just weighed against the cost of buying a mac/other Apple kit to run it on, or am I missing something else here?

We only use Apple Config so I may be wrong It can be, but with Apple DEP, it isn't really necessary to use Configurator. All those settings are automatically installed on first turn on (after connecting to a wireless network, any wireless network with an internet connection). That's how we deploy them here - hand the brand new tablet to the teacher after making sure it is registered in DEP. 1

Well I know we can do remote wiping, but we aren't using any 3rd party programs AFAIK. Dunno about the other stuff, but I know volume purchasing is ridiculously awkward with Apple.

They believe 3rd Party MDM's are more tailed to the needs of Education, such as Light Speed. Profile Manager is not great for large scale deployment, its designed for small deployments and thats it.

The words of Apple most senior UK engineer are "Profile Manager is only a proof of concept MDM" I've got hundreds of examples of schools that buy this when they start, or want to deploy 80 or more iPads with Profile Manager, I say no and walk away, six months later they come back asking what else I would recommend. My advice is steer clear and buy into a better more robust MDM that actually works, has support to integrate into AD and has great classroom management features as well.

Google apps (100% 'free') does things like remote wipe, whitelist apps etc for iOS. Manage additional policies on iOS devices, with controls around iCloud backup and lock screens. The solution offers monitoring of mobile deployments in your domain and the ability to remote wipe the entire device or Account wipe to erase Google Apps data only. Whitelist free iOS apps that users can install as managed apps on their iOS devices. Apparently we are on the legacy version and can just upgrade to the full version. The only time we will need to pay is if we have more than 100 devices. Good news for us and those with 100 or less. 3

Tammie Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 If anyone's interested, I've just got a quote for the list price from Meraki for Systems Manager (they did say there might be a discount through a reseller). Per device: 1 year $40, 3 years $80, 5 years $120 (roughly £26, £52 and £78).
