Pyroman Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Well i thought I'd got rid of every XP machine we had (apart from the one running digital signage) but i've just found an XP machine running a whiteboard in a classroom i rarely get called to. Time to kill it with fire and upgrade!

3s-gtech Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 We had one on the laser cutter until last year, until I got a later (unsigned) driver working on Windows 7 x64 with it. Horrible thing. All the others went two years back. If you're not sure, you can do a query import into AD to find any that you may still have on the domain.

DalekSec Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 We had an Outside line XP machine but we killed it last year so we are XP freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, Had a few little pcs running it but moved them onto Linux

No matter 8 or 10, you're a braver soul than I. 10 because it's too soon for me to want to deploy it in this environment. 8 because staff would set us on fire due to the metro menu

We won't be doing anything like that until the next release of Server comes out, and has bedded in for a good 12 months. Stability is most important, as bugs and downtime mean lost education time. The reports of Windows 10 bugs I've seen so far really put me off for a while!

I don't think 10 is ready for that kind of deployment yet, the OS is nice and decent, looks ok, Edge isn't configurable to a happy standard, though good luck if you are going bleeding edge like that, takes some guts imo

Ours is a Chinese jobbie from CTR Lasers - many have the same chipset (Leetro MPC6515/6535/6536/6575/6610) with ID %USB\VID_0548&PID_1005 so give it a try (you have to turn off driver signing which is a small faff). I'll have a go at sharing the driver if you need it. Was a swine to find.

Edge won't be on our install. Infact its not even on the LTSB. We will be using Chrome only. Servers will stay as they are.

Thanks, I will check the machine when I get a chance tomorrow and see if they match up, though I am guessing they won't from that as ours is Parallel port based. From when I spoke to the supplier last, if we had bought the cutter a year later it would have been supported up to at least windows 8

Funnily enough it was the bursars PC that was last, he had some bespoke finance software he was running that wouldn't work on 7 for love nor money but about 15 minutes after he decided he no longer needed it the machine had an SSD and was being reformatted
abillybob Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 I had the deputy the other day in a meeting say the following "Why do you think we should look to upgrading to Windows 10 next year, my cousin who works for HSBC came to mine on the weekend and she's still running XP on her laptop, surely as big as HSBC is it wouldn't make such a huge mistake in it's security to keep an operating system that's not secure anymore. Yet you where raving about how we had to get rid of Windows XP" I could of explained that places such as HSBC and NHS pay Microsoft for further support and updates, but I'm just starting to give up, why people don't Google these things if they have doubts about what I'm saying is beyond me.

Chuckster Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Still have a single machine with Windows 2000 Professional on it, that runs our door systems around the school. As it's not connected on the network I have never thought about upgrading it. Everything else is Windows 7 Pro.

rad Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 We removed the operational one in July. It was running our cashless system. Each time I had to reboot it, I went away, make a tea, drank it and went back. No joke it took ages and it was on an i5 computer.

Your school doesn't have wads of cash for the enormous post-EOL support costs from Microsoft.

DavR Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 My last job was in the LA schools IT team for a South London council.... we still had probably about a hundred XP devices running in our supported schools. Mostly ones and twos running dumb stuff like entry systems or CCTV that was a pain to shift, but yeah, a couple of schools with significant XP usage who just kept pleading poverty every time we pushed the issue! No XP in my new place as far as I know, touch wood....
rich_tech Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 I noticed today in Sainsbury's that they were still on XP looking at their computer in the reception/customer service area. It isn't like 7 has just come out at all here
