Windows 10 mandatory profile

Hello everyone,

 

I was wondering if someone can help, we currently have a mix of Windows 7 computers and some new Surface 3s running Windows 10. For the last few years we have used mandatory profiles on windows 7 which has worked well. However with the new Surfaces running Windows 10 I have created a new .v5 profile which works however the default apps such camera don't seem to work. Has anyone got them working or knows of a way to get them working.

Have you been able to remove all the tiles on the start menu? We are also trying to create a v5 profile.

Hi, Sometimes it shows tiles however other times not. When we save the profile to the server that stores the other profiles it automatically shows it as .v5.

We are slowly getting there with a 10 profile, however after moving the v5 profile over when we logon a user the start menu dont work! You click it and nothing happens, same when clicking the Action Center.

 

If we just copy our Window 7 V2 profile it does work just doesn't have any new settings for Windows 10.

 

Start Menu seems a right pain to customise, managed to do that and export the layout but sometimes tiles will just not show (before we broke the start menu with a man profile... )

How are you creating the v5 profile? The CopyProfile method?

We are now at the same point the start menu Cortana search and action centre don't open. I am just trying something now with the default profile, will keep you updated.

Creating a users on a Windows 10 machine, setting up and then copying the profile across after editing registry permissions etc. Worked with Windows 7.

It feels to me that something gets corrupted when you make it a mandatory profile

Having the same issues with mandatory profiles that are copied from another profile not opening the start menu. If I use the default profile ntuser file it would login and allow the start menu to work. But login times are about 40 seconds slower than are windows 7 machines.

I get all these issues too - I've stripped every metro app from our image & our default profile - But then it breaks search/sometimes the start menu doesn't work, cortana dies & notification centre does nothing

I have a feeling it's a bug that's going to have to be fixed by MS - I can't believe it got through QA tho.

been getting the "start-menu-does-not-open-feature" also. a normal roaming profile (same data, but not .MAN) seems to work fine.

Windows 7 is at SP1. Windows 8.1 is more than a service pack, but did many of the same things. Windows 10 will get a major update before long IMO, but I doubt they'll call it a SP.

If you used Wikipedia's definition then even the cumulative updates for Windows 10 - like the (374MB) KB3081448 update - could be considered service packs.

 

In computing, a service pack [...] comprises a collection of updates, fixes, or enhancements to a software program delivered in the form of a single installable package.

 

How many hotfixes, performance enhancements and new features does an update have to contain before it is thought of as a service pack?

 

Quite a few websites are classing the November update as a fairly major update since it will contain numerous improvements beyond just bug fixes. I imagine Microsoft will also release updated ISOs so you can go straight to TH2 without having to install build 10240 first (a bit like what they did with Windows 8.1 and the April/November 2014 updates).

Yesterday we tested with Insider Build 10532, the problem isn't fixed. :-(

I suffer the same issue. More precisely I have the problem to create a local mandatory profile and with the usual procedure startmenu and cortana don't work.

Here is a little step toward a partial solution:

1) Create a new user, let it be Template, with administrative privileges.

2) Login Template and configure as your taste. Note the initial oobe saying Windows is configuring apps. Logout.

3) Login as Administrator, rename the Default profile as Default.bak. With WindowEnabler copy the Template profile (the usual method) to Default profile (give Everyone full access).

4) Create a new directory into c:\Users: Mandatory.V5 and give Everyone full access on it. Create the Target local user and redirect its profile directory to c:\Users\Mandatory. Logout.

5) Login as Target (no more oobe - maybe it recognizes already registered apps). Now start menu should work. Cortana not yet. Logout.

6) Now you can close the profile Mandatory.V5 by renaming NTUSER.DAT as NTUSER.MAN.

7) To replicate the process into another pc, it's enough to copy the Default profile there and start from point (4).
