mikeprice Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 We watched the 2nd episode of Peaky Blinders last night SO far that is 2 episodes and Mrs mikeprice hasn't said "Sex on Legs" once I think she may be ill!!!
Bill8 Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 Watched the first episode of Picard, series 2. I was a bit confused up until the end, when it all sank into place. No spoilers here

I didn't think the final scene invalidated the rest of the ep. Unless what confused me was different to what confused you!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 Picard S02e01 was glorious! Whilst I enjoy Discovery. It often lacks in substance. Picard is grown-up Trek that truly feels like Star Trek. It's brilliant to just see more of universe post-nemesis, DS9 and Voyager rather than the somewhat fantastical far-off future that Discovery shows us.
Norphy Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 I enjoyed it, but it's a little frustrating that we're clearly not going to see that much more of that world, in this season at least. It looks like we're into some alternative timeline with the fascist-looking Picard in that painting. Q was also very uncanny valley until he aged himself there as well. Very Tron 2.0.
Rob_D Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 I enjoyed what they did with Picard episode 1 it was great to see all the cool federation ships (apparently they reached out to the star trek online team to help with those scenes). But am a little worried that we're going to go off and never really address what what happening in episode 1.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 I think whatever Q does will either be resolved in time to allow them to put to bed the wider threat from episode one at the end of the series. Allowing for a suitable Q > Jean-Luc epilogue. I'd happily watch a captain Rios show btw. They've done a lot of groundwork in these series to flesh out the state of The Federation and the wider galaxy and there are plenty of options to tell stories in this era.
CHiLL Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 Watched This Is Going To Hurt over the weekend. While it had some comedic moments, it also has some difficult moments. It certainly made me think about the NHS. I'm glad I watched it. Started Killing Eve on Saturday. I can tell it's not the same as previous series, but I still enjoyed episode 1. I also started the final series Peaky Blinders, binging episode 1 & 2 last night. Enjoying it so far.

It certainly made me think about the NHS. I'm glad I watched it. This Is Going to Hurt is an interesting one, considering its source material. You could clearly see the bits which were directly inspired by the diary and the way they've been woven around the storylines is clever. What's interesting for me is that they've kept Adam Kay's name as the main character, yet made him quite arrogant, cocky and at times thoroughly unpleasant. He didn't come across like this in the diaries, but then I suppose he wouldn't.

Yeah, his character was quite unpleasant and I guess it was to show how the working conditions can affect a person. I also believe the character of his mother is nothing like his actual mother, and that Shruti wasn't a real person, but I guess a representation of that side of the NHS.
witch Posted March 8, 2022 Posted March 8, 2022 Pieces of Her Netflix Watched 2 episodes so far. Quite exciting!
mavhc Posted March 8, 2022 Posted March 8, 2022 Finished Search Party, final season is crazy, read nothing about it
LeMarchand Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 For those enjoying Picard, season three has just wrapped. It will be the final season (Patrick Stewart isn't getting any younger). Also, don't you know that it's not considered the thing to like any "official" Trek post-Enterprise? At least judging by most forums I've visited . 2
MartinT Posted March 10, 2022 Posted March 10, 2022 Well, I like Picard. It's the best of all the post-TOS series with better fleshed out characters and a suitably complex storyline. Then there's Jeri Ryan and Orla Brady. What's not to like? 1

Then there's Jeri Ryan and Orla Brady. What's not to like? Allegedly all post-"Enterprise" Trek doesn't understand Roddenberry's vision, doesn't fit with canon, doesn't have any writers who understand SF, is nothing but action sequences, doesn't have any character development, has too many women in places of power, is too PC, has too few white straight males, has tech that doesn't fit with the timeline, has no-one who can act, and features The Gays. I'm sure there are more complaints I've forgotten, but that's the level of criticism on many forums! 1

Ewwww In all seriousness, militant trekkers/trekkies, or militant fanboys of any franchise for that matter, can do one. If they don't like $NewShow, they don't have to watch it. It doesn't mean that someone who does like $NewShow is wrong. Brings to mind this: (For the record, I actually quite like Enterprise, or some of it at least. It started quite well (apart from the gratuitous gel chamber scenes), got weaker during the second season, had an awful third and then once Manny Coto took over for the fourth season it actually started getting quite good. And "These are the voyages..." didn't happen) Edited March 10, 2022 by Norphy 1

If they don't like $NewShow, they don't have to watch it. It seems to be the thing these days to hate on anything recent and spend a lot of time raging against it; more than discussing the stuff you do like. I'm pretty sure that some of the basement dwellers who claim that no decent cinema has been produced since the 70s don't have parents old enough to have been going to the cinema back then. 1
mavhc Posted March 10, 2022 Posted March 10, 2022 Problem is if people watch crap then they won't make good shows, because good shows are more expensive, you have to hire actual writers and stuff 1

I'm sure there are more complaints I've forgotten, but that's the level of criticism on many forums! All 'Trek post TNG doesn't fit with his vision. The producers of DS9 (aside from ripping off JMS's B5 bible) knew that what they were doing was against Gene's vision. But he was at the end of his life and wasn't involved in development any more. Creative control had passed from him and the choices made were largely good for the franchise. Moving to the more modern 'Treks, Discovery started brilliantly and I've enjoyed it all. It's struggling now with the jump to a distant future, though. With shorter series, they're able to really focus on the series arc, but that means the development of the wider universe gets lost a little. Quick note on Discovery tech. In their far future they've certainly ramped things up, but it's very much in danger of becoming fantastical. With the level of advancement they've given that timeline, they're required to create ever more ridiculous situations for the crew, otherwise it would just be overcome with ease. It starts to become less believeable. A sci-fi already takes liberties with what the audience will believe, push that too far and you lose interest. Anyway, more positives. A cast and characters representitive of the best of the world today is absolutely to be celebrated and enjoyed! Each show having a different feel is brilliant. Discovery is the flashy, modern interpretation. Picard the thoughtful homage to TNG. Lower Decks a love letter to the franchise as a whole. I've not seen Progidy, but it reading up on it suggests it has the classic 'Trek feel whilst aiming for fans and kids alike. Finally, Strange New Worlds looks a promising crossover between the feel of Enterprise and the Original Series. New trailer linked below. Crikey! That was a lot of words! 1
mavhc Posted March 10, 2022 Posted March 10, 2022 Pretty sure mushroom teleportation isn't "brilliantly"
LeMarchand Posted March 10, 2022 Posted March 10, 2022 Problem is if people watch crap then they won't make good shows, because good shows are more expensive, you have to hire actual writers and stuff But what is rubbish to one person is gold to another. I'd be surprised if (m)any on here have watched the sublime "Galavant" or even the more currently easy to access "Schmigadoon". More to the point, in the case of new Trek, most of those complaints would have been used by the same sort of people against the now inviolate "real" Trek had the internet been around in the day. 1
localzuk Posted March 10, 2022 Posted March 10, 2022 I've been watching something light-hearted lately. Young Sheldon. Not watched any before. Enjoying it. The kids are great.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 10, 2022 Posted March 10, 2022 Pretty sure mushroom teleportation isn't "brilliantly" But it is brilliant. As a plot device it allowed the writers to try new things, create new scenarios and drive the story along at pace. It was quickly established to be pretty much a one-off bit of kit that was dangerous to produce, therefore not upsetting established canon. Science-wise it takes liberties in the same way most other 'Trek tech does. The idea is based on what we know of fungal networks here on earth. They just added the extraplanar portion and made travel instantaneous. It's not so different from inventing a crystalline power source that makes theoretical warp travel possible, or force fields that hold an atmosphere from escaping, or teleportation devices that require a magical Heisenberg Compensator to get around the annoying rockblock that is his uncertainty theory, or artificial gravity, or inertial compensators that stop the crew getting turned to soup whenever a ship moves. The difference is that these are established pieces of technology in the Star Trek universe and the Spore Drive was new. 1
