IMHO it was a long way from either the best or worst of what is made for TV these days. People seem to forget how bad a bad episode/story really can be when a season is missing a proper stinker. Also (while not relevant in the case of SNM) often the ones adults hate can be the ones younger children love.

agreed I could barely be bothered to watch it I think I might give up on dr who at end of this series theres been 2 maybe 3 good episodes

Very hit-and-miss recently. This one was very much a swing and a miss, though.

 

I liked the fact they were trying to make sleep something so vital, but the sleep monsters? wut? And the bit at the end of encoding it into the video stream was quite a smart twist, but it wasn't enough to make the episode any good.

 

I would've much rather "having no sleep turns you into a sleep monster" than "the dust in the corner of your eyes grows and becomes sentient... somehow..".. Well where does it grow? How does nobody notice this? You flick a grain of sleep from your eye and drop it in the bin/on the floor/whatever - how does that grow into something humanoid without anybody noticing?

 

It was just.. meh. Too much talk, not enough sense. And fine, I don't watch Doctor Who for its breathtaking realism, but things have to be wibbly-wobbly-plausible at least, and this one was anything but.

Given a few loose ends/unexplained plot devices left hanging, and an earlier loose end that was very deliberately flagged then tied up ("we don't have head cams"), I wonder whether this is going to be 'retconned' in the final few episodes.

It was retconned 2 minutes after she said that, the Doctor asked what she'd said and she repeated "We don't have headcams!", and he deduced that the dust around them was being used to record and to allow the sandmen to "see" (which is why they were blind, the dust/things were hijacking their optics.. or some timeytechnobabble like that)

 

Not the best explanation in the word but they did 'explain' it

Sorry, I was unclear. I was trying to say that I suspect that the head-cam incident, was the writer flagging up to the audience that glaring gaps (where we the audience notice a jarring hanging thread) are deliberate and we should expect them to be cleared up. Therefor the audience should expect that the twist and questions left at the end will also be dealt with at some point (necessarily soon as we are nearly at the end of the series).

I have just read a spoiler-laden review of tonight's episode, none of which I will repeat here, but what I will say is at the end the review said:

What an episode. Just watched on catch-up, the finale looks like its going to bring everything up to date.

 

I'm finding it hard to understand the love for this episode. Yes, it was well acted and I loved the idea of chiselling away for billions of years - but I actually nodded off a few times. (It had been a hectic weekend!)

I think I enjoyed it because it was just Peter Capaldi getting to be a good actor without Useless Whatsherface dragging the episode down. Never liked Clara.

 

On the flipside, though, all I could think all along was that the Doctor and I share the same idea of Hell: trapped in a 90's CD-ROM adventure game, dying to the same boss over and over again, going round in circles and repeating the same actions in the hopes of stumbling upon a switch you must have missed last time.

 

Two points about the Uberdiamond wall:

1) Why did he punch out a nice little arch? He really didn't need to make it that high. An awkward little tunnel just big enough to wriggle through would have saved him millions of years.

2) It'd have been annoying if that room had reset the same way the others did, wouldn't it?

My feelings towards the character of Clara may have been swayed by her attractiveness! I'm hoping the next companion will be a companion rather than an equal (or even greater) part of the show than The Doctor. None of this stuff about their home lives either. Also I'm hoping the next season will be less "clever clever" and more standalone adventures.

 

Is there an Xmas special this year?
