Our GA date of July 29th 2015 was just announced and customers now have the ability to reserve a free copy of Windows 10. By making a reservation, customers can be one of the first to receive their upgrade when it becomes available at GA. Windows 7 and 8.1 customers can reserve their free upgrade by clicking on the Get Windows 10 App located on their system tray and can learn more by visiting How to Upgrade to Windows 10 - Microsoft. To learn more check out the Windows Experience blog and read the Windows 10 FAQ. I personally want to thank all of you on here whom have participated in the Windows Insider Program over the past few months, your feedback has been vital part of the next version of Windows! fairm010 Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Looks great, thanks James. On another note, will that small icon be rolled out via Windows Update? For the schools such as myself who do not use WSUS (It's on the to-do list) how can we prevent our pupils and staff seeing this little button?
Boredguy Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Well if you've got an enterprise version of Windows installed, it seems that from the Q&A page we won't have to worry as we're not eligible for that version of windows 10...looks like I'll have to download it via the Volume Licence section instead =/

Gatt Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Doesn't really answer any of them - it's just the upgrade path It more about what happens in a years time (or indeed beforehand) if you need to re-install... Can we reinstall with a clean (and free) copy of Win10 or do we need to install Win8.1 (or Win7) first, and crucially, when we reinstall Win10 - will it still be free?

Do we have to install Win8.1 then be allowed to re-apply Win10 without charge As 2, but have to fork out £xxx.yy for the privilage? 1 probably 2 assuming its like windows 8.1 I have an upgrade key from 7 to 8 but it accepted my upgrade key when doing a fresh install of 8.1 without going via 8.0(though to get it to boot I had to install 7 first or it just went to a blank screen)
Michael Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 I would always recommend a fresh install of Windows 10 and not an upgrade. The amount of updates Windows 8 and 8.1 have received, I wonder if Microsoft will use the old trick and rename the Windows folder to Windows.old?

I think the only solution is a USB flash drive, formatted in FAT32, then copy/extract the Windows 10 ISO. The Surface Pro should boot from this when pressing/holding the volume button, press the power button and then release the volume button when the logo appears.

Rufus is your friend for this, it easily makes bootable USB keys for BIOS or UEFI boot options.

There is likely to be a Windows 10 iso available, you may need to install 7 to get the key for it though. We'll know more details closer to the time when Microsoft tell us how it's planning on handling people who want to rebuild their PC after the 1 year free upgrade has expired.
SpuffMonkey Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 There are some quite helpful bits here Windows 10 FAQ & Tips - Microsoft and Windows - Microsoft Community but I'm a bit concerned about the discussion on whether you have to pay for W10 if you need to do a full rebuild after the first year - that would be a deal breaker for me :-(
Gatt Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Something I've just found out is that if your PC is joined to the domain then the new "Get Windows 10" app doesn't show on the taskbar I had to drop a PC off the domain to get the notification and reserver a copy, then rejoin to the domain.

Gatt Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Just as well I don't need to upgrade for a bit, but I have 2 PCs that really need to be replaced at home Think its time to buy/build and then put Windwos 7 or 8 on them to get the a free upgrade! Now to get it past the Bank Manager.. err Wife...
